Flying abroad - Cyprus

Great. Thanks Sparky.
I saw the Luxembourg site mentioned before, but couldn’t seem to find the right link within it.

Logged in to the Luxembourg site and got my A1/A3 Open cert for EASA last night. Relatively painless and good course material. Some of it was unintentionally funny (the situational awareness video trust was about a guy getting mugged seemed a bit odd). But it’s free - so can’t complain.

One little challengette - if you want to register as an operator though the Luxembourg site but you live outside Luxembourg you have to submit a paper based form and the turnaround is 15 working days. So I’m now in the slightly odd position of having my flyer cert via Luxembourg and my operator ID via Cyprus - which I suspect doesn’t quite meet the rules, but this is all “insurance “ anyway, in case someone challenges me when I’m flying in Cyprus. (Operator ID is online with the Cypriot site - €15, but immediate delivery)

Thanks for the pointers…

However the Cyprus CAA costs less and has a longer validity.

Just back from our trip to Cyprus and had a lot of fun with the Mini 4 Pro. First proper play with it, really, so I have lots of learning from my amateurish videography so far. Especially handling changing light conditions. Might post some clips once I’ve worked through them.

I was in Larnaca for a few days and as the airport is so close to the city I had to get the Restricted Zone authorisation to fly there. It was really straightforward and worked well. (I used the website via my phone rather than the built-in access request as that kept saying “try again later”.) Similar situation in Paphos.

A couple of observations from my trip:

I wasn’t approached/questioned by anyone at anytime when I was flying - which is pretty much what I expected as Cyprus is very laid-back - and I was careful about where I was flying.

There were several other DJI mini pilots out there in the same locations. Especially near the Edro III shipwreck - classic place for a drone pilot - and Agios Giorgios a little further along the western coast around sunset. Again - classic location for drones. I’m sure it will only get busier.

(Anyone seen the “HELCH” graffiti around the UK will be delighted to hear that he/she has also plastered the side of the Edro III shipwreck their tag… Bit of a poor man’s Banksy with nothing better to do with their time, I guess)

Thanks for the real experience update. :+1:

Heading off to Cyprus in a couple of weeks, looks like pretty standard EASA rules etc.

However, currently showing front and centre on their Dept. Civil Aviation drone info page is the following…

This is a totally new one to me - anyone had experience of this? (Particularly if it’s affected their flying)

Is this as the two halves of the island are technically still at war, or something else?

Apparently its a genuine problem as a result of the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East …

Wow. That’s some serious interference over pretty large swathes of territory then!

Thx for posting info. I shall watch GPS and RTH veeeery carefully. :+1:

Quick question re Cyprus - I suspect I know the answer but any confirmation is appreciated.

I emailed the Cyprus Dept of Civil Aviation re a broken link on their page, I told them I was heading to Cyprus in a week’s time and I have EASA registration, drones are labelled etc - all the usual stuff. The response was… brief. Very brief! ‘Where did you get that link?’ and ‘Please note that you also have to be a registered Operator’ - then pointed me to a link on their site where it’s €15 for registration. Cyprus is part of EU, I am pretty certain therefore I am not required to specifically register in Cyprus, nor pay their fee. This is correct yes?

Thx folks.

If you have EASA you’re good to go.

Trip Report! - October 2024

Just back from a few spectacular days in Cyprus. Somewhat super spawny (!), my wife had to go there for work so I tagged along, and had the days and a rental car to myself. I did nigh on 900km over 4 days  And boy, did the car take a beating on some of the Cypriot ‘roads’ :see_no_evil:

So, a quick run down of the current situation and some of the spots I explored for anyone that finds this thread in the future.

The warning shown earlier on this thread re GPS spoofing is still active, and is taken v. seriously by the authorities.

Asprokremmos Dam and Reservoir

The lower end of this falls just within the boundaries of the Paphos Airport NFZ but permission is attainable via a fairly complicated application process, which I completed a week before I went.

The tiny red box was my intended flight zone. I was however told that my application was rejected on the grounds of the GPS spoofing, but I could fly the area of the Dam / reservoir that fell outside this boundary. So… I did.

Amiantos abandoned mine

This place was totally Scooby Doo territory! Well off the beaten track and some sketchy trails to actually get down to the level where all the buildings are, which is still several hundred feet above the bottom of the valley (mine?).

Random Resort Bando

Found this place completely by chance whilst trying to reach another spot (which, incidentally, I failed to get to due to the fact that what Google Maps counts as roads often were not!)

There are a lot of these places around, but the scale of this one was completely bonkers, it’s about 300m end to end and loads of room to play.

The wreck of the Edro III

This is, understandably, a very popular spot for drone pilots and I’ve seen a few clips / images taken here. It really is in a stunning location and the disparity between the ship and its surroundings is stark.

Kourion Stadium

Just away from the main Kouroin Archaeological site, this place pretty much looks like a brick wall around a car park at ground level! The view from 200ft up is a lot better though

Loads of coastline / cliffs

I doubt there has been much rain in Cyprus for many months, I’ve been told in the spring it’s pretty green but come October the island is pretty stark and barren. It’s a fairly brutal type of beauty for sure. The coastline however is simply spectacular and I spent many batteries just cruising.

Limassol by night

This was just a very quick flight to test the night shot capabilities of the mini 4K. Flying at night was a bit bonkers and certainly not something I’ve done on many occasions. Super happy with the results though!.

I was only approached on two occasions - both whilst filming at the wreck, and both just wanted to see the view the I could! Very laid back friendly place overall but there is a lot of Cypriot and British military activity on the island (It’s only about 100km LOS to Beirut so it’s a fairly well used staging point atm)

And yup - there are many areas where they really don’t want you going - I did of course stick to the rules! :innocent:

End of the road!..

An absolutely bloody brilliant trip overall, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have this sort of opportunity. Won’t happen again for a long time I’m sure!

Hi. Thinking of taking my DJI mini 4 pro to Cyprus for photography. Had a quick look online on the rules and it seems I need to register myself with the government and do A1 A3 training plus test.
Are these applicable to sub 250gm drones. I currently hold a A2 CofC so would I still need to do the training?
Thanks.

Yes, and yes. Your A2 is not recognised in Europe following Brexit.
