Fun And Friendly Edit Challenge - Discussion Thread

As we are halfway through spring and almost into summer, the opportunity for flying drones is increasing day by day, and the opportunity for spending time in front of photoshop diminishes, we are wondering if it is time to bring FAFEC to a close for a short time, maybe restarting on the final Sunday of October when the clocks go back? The number of entrants has been in decline, most likely due to increased flying opportunities. So, as it is your challenge, we have decided to have a poll for you guys to vote on. Whatever the outcome of the poll, is what will happen. The Current rounds will remain open until their conclusion.
@group-challenges

  • Keep it open, come hell or high water
  • Postpone until the clocks go back
  • Cancel altogether in favour of something yet to be decided

Just a note to say that the pole is anonymous to all.
And that if you have any comments, suggestions, feedback, or indeed what you would like to see challenges-wise in the future, please feel free to add it here.

I have not had a go at it mainly due to just no time at all. However I am aware that it is a job that you have to do and if no one or few people are participating then it is not fair doing all the work. I think that this question should be ammended with another option saying. Do what you think is best. This gives you the option to have a break if it is not going to work right now for you. I think all the people who work hard for this can take a break if they feel it is worth a break.

In all honesty, I feel there’s far to many challenges going on at the same time. There’s overlapping challenges too as well as the vote for the winner, vote for the challenge (and also voting in local elections):wink:

Didn’t you not vote ?

Couldn’t see the point in our “regional mayor” election. I kept asking local councillors why we need a regional mayor and was told the regional mayor would get hold of funding from central government for money to be spent on East Midlands infrastructure etc ( roads and road repairs) I asked how much this was going to cost us ? “Ooh , nothing, It will come from central government. ( where do they think Westminster gets this money from ? Oh yeah, us tax payers) I asked if local council funding from the government would be reduced, only to be told it wouldn’t. On the day of the election one councillor responded, “Well, of course each of the councils that come under this regional mayor, will lose funding”
So it’s obviously a job creation scheme. I don’t know what salary the mayor is on, nor the ancillary staff/ premises and associated cost are going to be, but I’m assuming it isn’t going to be cheap.:wink:

If you’re bored foi it

They are paid by us . and also answerable to us.

Pester the fuck out of them

Too many challenges? Really? I don’t mean that in the way it will come accross in print, by the way
There’s only 5 challenges, and we have over 15,000 members

And the challenges aren’t all the same.

For the drone photographer there is RTF and also the Wall of Fame

There is the video of the month

FAFEC to share editing skills (or create hideous over HDR’d monstrosities, depending on your point of view :frowning: )

And the recently introduced and very undersubscribed IWitCH for non-drone photography.

As there seems to be a steady stream of still and moving images making their way into the relevant threads, many of which will have had at least cursory editing it would seem that the five current competitions should appeal across a broad spectrum of members.

Sadly it appears not.

I’d have thought that shortly we’ll be having the GADC Big Birthday Challenge coming up ?

Is it worth it. Less than thirty people at the start, less at the finish and a massive effort on the art of the judges. 15,000 registered members, 30 entrants.

It seems to appeal to one person in 500 …

I have all good intentions of joining in with it. I have all good intentions with putting some Youtube vids up. I just really need to find something that is worth putting up and telling my general life to give me a little bit of time. Working up to 18 hours a day is not good anyway and I should try to stop. GADC at least allows me to ALT TAB back and fourth. The massive job I am doing with the music may get done one day. Only took me 27 years so far. Must be an end soon lol.

So to the people who work hard with the ideas and the work involved. I would like to say a sorry for not taking part. It is not that I can not be arsed. Just time is not on my side and other things that I will not bore you with. My intentions are grand though. I love being part of GADC and will do my best (holding fingers up like a cub scout with a dib dib dib and a dob dob dob).

There is absolutely und utterly no need for anyone to apologise Russ. This was not intended as a dig to the membership for not taking part, more to gather ideas for what YOU guys would like to see. Us guys in the ChallCom team are here to try and make this place more fun, worthwhile, and interesting for the membership, we happily donate our time to the club as our way of giving something back. The FAFEC takes up very little time and I personally don’t mind it continuing, but it is starting to feel a little stagnant if I’m being honest. It’s original intention was to give us something to do in the quieter flying months through winter, and to help us improve our editing skills. At the beginning, the winner of each round would give a brief description of how they got to their final edit and share their knowledge. Perhaps that’s an element we should have continued with to keep the interest going?

With only 18 votes cast so far, and a day and a half left before it closes, we are at 50/50.
In the event of a tie, ChallCom will have the casting vote after a discussion between its members.

Any more for any more? Vote closes in around 4 hours and only 21 votes cast when tagging @group-challenges and notifying 66 group members. Remember this is also open for any ideas you may have

It may be that people consider it too hard or their skills in photoshop are rubbish?

There is a degree of not wishing to look an idiot.

It should be seen as a place to learn and to ask for advice which would be freely given by other competitors.

ISTR that the original idea was for the winner to post a picture that needed improvement for the subject of the next round. They would also give an insight into what they had done to the previous picture in order to create a prizewinner.

It seems to have drifted from that ideal to the subject picture being posted looking ok to begin with and then being HDR’ed to f***

If we can get back to the idea of the winner posting a not very good looking picture for the next round for people to improve and to discuss their techniques then the competition becomes valuable.

Just my :coin: :coin:

Got loads of them! :rofl::rofl:

It started a bit before my membership began, but as I recall you are spot on Rob @macspite
It was intended to improve our editing skills, with people sharing how they arrived at their final destination. Something that will hopefully be returning soon. The other benefit was to give us something to do in the winter months which was why I thought it would be better to postpone until October. But the masses have voted by a slender majority to keep it going. So that is what will happen
Thanks to anyone for voting and/or getting involved, would still like to hear if any of you have challenge ideas going forward, don’t be shy now peeps!!!

I think we’re all going to arrive at our “final destination “ in much the same way ( peacefully in our sleep, like my grandad, unlike the passengers on his bus ):rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
