GPS and RF signal jamming - The great big notifications thread

Ok - I should have said check Dronescene before leaving home on the day of flying!

I was really only meaning that it’s strange that there isn’t one already. Normally these appear a good week, or more, in advance.

Agreed. I’ll now be forced to compulsively check every couple of hours until it does appear. Looks like there’s some great places to fly around there

Some nice HIRTA to check out, and “military” activity. :+1:

RAF Spadeadam, located in Cumbria, is the only Electronic Warfare Tactics facility in Europe where aircrews can practise manoeuvres and tactics against a variety of threats and targets that they face in contemporary warfare.

:fearful:

It also doesn’t have any runways! The cutbacks are really hitting the RAF.

And Spadeadam are having another jam session from the 17th …

Jamming activity will take place between the 17 and 28 May 2021.

Jamming equipment will be located within 3 KM of 550306N 0023318W. Activity may affect GNSS equipment within a radius of 30NM. Please refer to AIC P022/2021for more information.

Activity may also affect common licence exempt frequencies used for UAS control and electronic situational awareness devices within a radius of 14NM. Including 2.4, 5.8 GHz.

During the trials impacted systems may suffer intermittent or total failure. An associated NOTAM has been raised.

Anybody got any information on the NOTAM for this? Don’t see it on any of the usual mapping sites…

From the notification, this is covering a fairly significant area on Wednesday & Thursday this week, Tuesday-Thursday next week.

That seems a little severe.

You think this might be the same as yours, @macspite, just with a less specific location?

Hi Joe,

I posted the info as sent to me in a CAA Skywise email. There is no NOTAM yet on Dronescene.

Yeah, weird one… does seem to be a different notice as yours was a specific 30NM radius (and the NOTAM less) and the new one that arrived in my email today is the whole of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and NW England. Unless I’m misreading the one I posted?

Just seems odd… if they’re planning 5 days of GNSS interruptions affecting three-and-a-bit countries you’d think there’d have been some kind of public notice of that beyond CAA info bulletins.

Had notification from CAA skywise advising about the above. This is being carried out by MOD quintec in this area of west Scotland. This is the start of it. This is only a trail. But could be around all airports, some distance the report says up to 40nm but 22nm at 70m AMSL. Does depend on height obviously, bu It supposed to be to effect non licensed frequencies. But it’s out there!

Hi @KeithV and welcome to GADC, I’ve moved your post here to thread all similar advance notices of this activity

Issue identified with time information in GPS data, or specifically one widely used bit of software which is used to read time data. I wonder if this dodgy code is embedded in things like DGI drones…

Does this mean if we’re flying our drones that evening, at midnight, they will all fly back in time to their location almost 20 years ago? Like Back to the future for drones…

No - but it means we can fly our drones absolutely anywhere because the CAA/NATS doesn’t know they even exist.

Fancy a trip to Heathrow?

Southampton AP may not be as significant - but I’m closer to the centre of the (2021) FRZ than I am to its limit … so take-off in the garden.
