Not sure how many would be aware of this, but us radio hams often run a data system called APRS. I won’t bore you with the details but some of these stations have weather stations at their home that upload real time to the web.

Simply go to:

http://aprs.fi

…and scroll the map to your area. Look for an APRS station labelled as ‘WX’ (Weather) and click on it. You will get a box pop up with real time weather data.

Simply find one close to the area you wish to fly for a current weather report.

Remember these are real-time weather, not a forecast.

Nice. I just noticed that you can also save the detailed weather URL of the local WX station.

That could come in handy there’s one just up the road from me, not useful for local but if I’m heading off somewhere very useful if I find a WX near where I’m going.
