Hello from Chepstow

Good Morning all,
Absolutely new to drones. Decided to take the plunge after a friend took one whilst we were out walking in Scotland. Thought I’ve got some room in my rucksack so why not give it a go. Purchased a DJI Flip which arrives today and I’m currently going through the clubs “mandatory” reading before I start some basic simple training and getting to grips with it in a big field!

Any suggestions on training routines would be welcome. I saw one saying make the outline of a figure T and a figure 8 to start but any other suggestions most welcome.

I’ll be looking for video enhancing and editing advice later once I’ve mastered flight I’m sure.

Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.

There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.

We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.

And finally, if you are new to drones and wondering what it’s all about, have a look at Resources for a beginner.

Welcome once again!

Hi Andy and welcome.

Help i got similar to what you said about figure of 8’s was also to do boxes fly forward then bank left without turning drone, fly back in reverse then bank right for a few laps then turn the drone 180 degrees and do the same so controls are basicaly reversed…im still learning to fly myself and there is a lot of experience in the group who can maybe give other ideas …but definitley find a big open field and go play

Thats about the basics covered, when you can do them camera in and camera out, prefearbly line of sight (no peeping at the screen) you’ve cracked it

I found this video https://youtu.be/ixYnzcZZu9g

In the post about resources for a newbie on here and found it really useful. I’ve been trying these out. Struggling with the circle at the moment but I’ll keep practicing.

That’s a really good point about looking at the screen. I haven’t been but I guess it must be easier if you did but then you’re not watching where you’re going :man_shrugging:

Welcome to the group.

As it it says above. Fig of 8. A T away from you, a T up, fig of 8, square keeping drone facing away from you, a square doing line of travel.

Maybe try a challenge. In an open space place an object a distance away. Without peeking fly to it and land. Then have a walk over and realise just how hard it is to guage distance. When flying keep sky around your drone. You can not bump into sky. If there are off the lead dogs, give yourself extra batrery time to land in case the dog comes over and stands in landing spot waiting for it. Hopefully ower will get involved and retrieve dog. Yeah right… last thing you need is a drone forced landing.

We had the dog problem, so i flew away taking dog with me, flew out of sight so dog could not see then raced back. The dog could hear but not see so i got a head start.
