Hello from Leicestershire!

Hi everyone,

I’m a new flyer from the little villages around Leicestershire.
I had a DJI mavic a few years ago, never really used it properly and sold it on as the rules and regs totally confused me and I just daren’t fly the darned thing!

In my 50’s now and just purchased a DJI mini 4k, hoping to build up my skills, and maybe even use it in my photography business one day… so let’s hope an old dog can learn new tricks! :joy: Wish me luck!

Hi @ceekay27 and welcome to the group. You’ve got a great little drone in the DJI Mini 4K. There is no such thing as an old dog lol, but there is always new tricks to learn. Especially at The BIG MEET in June and Sep. Wealth of knowledge in one place.

Thanks for all the replies! Such a great community.
I had a little fly of my drone for the first time yesterday evening, felt really self-conscious, and only really went up, daren’t take it far forwards or backwards! I know confidence will come with time. So this afternoon, planning a trip out with my daughter, just to have a better play with it.
Quick question, how do you folks gauge distance? I’m scared of getting too close to a tree, or even worse a pylon, what height do you all recommend flying at? Thanks

Stick it at 50m, easy to spot and high enough to miss most stuff if you’re out in the open

Well my personal opinion ‘ being new at it ‘ id find yourself a nice big open space as possible & keep it quite near & not to high untill you are comfortable with flying up/down orientation left/right etc,

That’s quite hard to answer & comes down to being aware / experience what is around you & good judgement ‘ call it if you will ‘, sometimes things can look closer than what they really are as vice a versa look further away than what they are or higher or lower than what they really are if that makes sense, so good judgement is key & will all come in time but the other thing to consider is, if say the tree or the building near or around you is say 200 feet high ( guesstimate ) make sure you set you RTH height ( return to home ) so it’s higher than the tallest thing around you as in the event of a connection loss or hitting the RTH button you don’t want it crashing into anything like you’ve mentioned above, I hope that makes sense for you :slightly_smiling_face:

Also when time allows you it maybe worth taking a look in this thread Here as it has some good information for when starting out ….

Thank you, I’m going somewhere with a big open field this afternoon, although surrounded by trees down one side and along the bottom, so hoping I can get a feel for distances here. I know I’ll be more confident the more I fly. Thanks for your reply, and I’ll take a look at the thread you pointed me to

No problems
Just take it easy & if you get a bit nervous or in sticky situation ( don’t panic ) just let go of the sticks on the controller & the drone will hover in place while it gives you time to reset rethink,
Hope all goes well for you
