Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.
There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.
We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.
And finally, if you are new to drones and wondering what it’s all about, have a look at Resources for a beginner.
Welcome once again!
Hi Chris & thank you ![]()

thanks for all the info!
Hi Scott and welcome to here, I’m in hull so probably not far from you but I do travel around quite a lot as I drive for Beverley Community Lift and during the summer months I usually have my Mini4 with me. Have fun and join the local group for meet ups.

Congratulations on passing your A2 licence.
I currently hold a fixed wing pilots license, I flew in the RAF and now civilian arena.
With respect to the A2 license, what sort of questions where asked?
Did they ask using an aeronautical chart, about restricted airspace, about looking at obstructions on the chart and route planning?
Im curious as to how similar the syllabus is, (air law and navigation) with respect to a full pilots licence.
Kind regards
Truth be told it’s a £49 NVQ (no value qualification)
Hi @scottzorro welcome from a ‘sunny’ Leven.
Hi & thanks - exam & syllabus was a mix of general aviation & drone laws, knowledge of airspace classes, NOTAMS, CAPs etc, some meteorology & of course the aviation laws surrounding different classes of drones, although an aviation chart was included in the course materials but no exam questions on it - I’m sure as a qualified pilot, it would be a breeze for you
Hi chis - hadn’t seen it for £49 anywhere- it cost me double that!
In terms of value, for me it allows me to fly my mavic 4 in the A2 category (near people)rather than A3 (far from people) so it’s certainly not a NVQ for me but Obviously little to no value if you only have c0/c1 drones.
We have a discount for Silver and Gold Members that gets you 50% off with UAV Academy, bring the price down to only £49
My only issue with it is the lack of a practical element, I liken it to letting a 17 year old out on the roads after passing their theory test.
That’s a fair point- you are required to give proof of flying experience though- although that doesn’t show how well you were flying during those logged hours. I believe the GVC has a practical element although I would liken flying a drone to driving an automatic car around an empty aerodrome rather than a manual car on a public road, it’s not particularly difficult & provided you follow the rules & guidance given during the training, I can see why they deem it safe without a practical element & to be fair there are plenty of inconsiderate bell ends on the roads who have passed their practical driving test ![]()
