Hi from Epsom

Hi there, semi-newbie here from Epsom.
Aside from drone flying (which admittedly I haven’t done as much as I should have) I’m into photography (mostly wildife and astronomy), software, electronics, and a bunch of other stuff.

I have a very old DJI Mavic Mini, and tempted to get more involved into flying and pull the trigger on the Mini 5 Pro as well… couple of things restraining me though, not just the cost itself, but I feel like there’s so much I need to know, between local bylaws, SSSI (important one to me as I like to be around wildlife), etc, so I’m here in the hope that this’ll help me motivate me flying more, and get all the info I need

Welcome !

On paper the rules / regs look really restrictive and bad but in reality its not all that bad - a lot of the SSSI stuff are around the green stuff on the grounds and the ones to do with wildlife there will be ways to work around them such as not flying too close or during or a round nests etc but that is all part of the fun of flying is to work out the best way to be that good operator.

You have an epic drone in the Mini 5 pro - get out and enjoy.

Just noticed with my new drone that I have had like 4 months I have flown it way more than I did with my last one that I had for nearly 3 yrs - the new tech in these things just make you want to fly more and more - I hope that will be true for you.

Yeah, but it is scary thought, makes you feel quite unwelcome :frowning: plus it is an honest concern, as I do care about wildlife, and definitely wouldn’t want to upset an already delicate ecosystem.

I’m about to go to Flamborough Head in a couple of weeks, mostly for “regular” wildlife photography, but I’ll try to contact Natural England as suggested on the front page in here to see if it might be possible to bring a drone with me, as the location is quite stunning!

well.. not yet, still mulling it over  most likely I’ll go through with it though, it really is a nice piece of kit!

Check out this post here and reach out to people here who have flown here — Flamborough Head - Added to Coastal Scenery in Yorkshire and the Humber

Loads of useful info - you don’t need to contact Natural England - know the rules as outlined by the CAA - fly within them rules and your fine - NE will basically say NO yet you could well be within your rights to fly here and be safe

Don’t mull it over too long haha - honestly you will be amazed at how far the tech has moved along - I kick myself for not getting my new drone sooner - I have had my Air 3s for like 4 months and it has flown longer / further / more times than my mini 3pro did in the 3 years of ownership haha

Flamborough & nearby Bempton cliffs are a hugely important sea bird breeding area and we are right in the peak season for nesting birds, flying a drone there at this time could be considered as disturbing wildlife, I’d leave it for a few months.

Yeah that’s what I was afraid of… I’ll probably leave it for now

Use the time to get acquainted with your new drone ( if you do get a new one ) then you will be more confident when it comes to flying in such locations and you will enjoy it way more.

Great for bird photography though if you have a suitable long lens.:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Well yes, that was the original plan  RF 100-500 (which on an APS-C camera should give me about 800mm equivalent… hopefully it’s good enough :crossed_fingers: )
