Hi from Missouri, USA - and flying my drone in Scotland

Hi,
My Name is John MacPherson. I am an avid drone flyer in the Us, St Louis Missouri. I am coming accross to Helensbrough, Scotland on June 1st. I just recently registered my Drone in your Country and aim to fly it around the Helensbrough area. I also joined your club hoping you all can possibly give me some tips about flying my drone in your country.
Thank You,

John

Welcome once again!

Hi John @MacPherson :wave:t2:

The very first thing to do is read this:

https://register-drones.caa.co.uk

It explains the CAA regulations (a bit like your FAA, but probably worse ) and how you can register to fly here in the UK.

The second step, as @SirGunner mentioned, is to check out places to fly over at Drone Scene. These are all locations which have been recommended by other members.

Locations in Scotland can be filtered here: Where can I fly my drone in the UK? - Drone Scene

Hi John and welcome. As Steve has said check out drone scene. Using the various layers in the tools you can see where you can and can’t fly, just like in the US the dji layer is not accurate regarding law so be careful with that one.

Hi John, welcome from the Black Country.

Beware of flying north west of Helensbrough area, as there is a Nuclear submarine base (heavily guarded) at Faslane which is a bit farther up Gare Loch. They’re welcoming people up there, but the Navy/MOD police don’t like people with cameras of any sort.

P.S. don’t eat the deep fried Mars bars or square sausage!

Hello and welcome John.
Make the most of GADC & DroneScene and I’m sure you’ll have a blast!

Hi John - welcome to GADC :+1: :+1: :+1:

In addition to the suggestions already made - when you browse through Drone Scene - click on the Good 2 Go menu then enter the details of your drone and where you intend to fly and Good 2 Go will advise you if there are any legal requirements that allow/prevent you from flying IAW the CAA requirements. The CAA rules are similar to FAA but there are some differences. Have play with Good 2 Go entering different scenarios and it should give you a good feel for what is possible :+1: :+1: :+1:

Hi John,

Welcome to GADC, I hope you have a great trip to Scotland, I was there recently and got some great footage… As others have said the Drone Scene map is excellent, also gives the areas where you cant fly - the military FRZ that covers most of the northern highlands is not in place 100% of the time, so check out the schedule if you visit and you may be able to fly - schedule is here - Military low flying: RAF operational low flying training timetable - GOV.UK

Hi John and welcome to GADC!

Fixed that typo for you John @Hotrodspike

Lorne sausage is lovely, and DFMB can be amazing - had some in a tempura batter at a Burns Night supper one year that was divine - although the one we had from the Kirkwall chippy was perhaps not quite so good…

@MacPherson welcome. You will love Scotland, especially the west coast.

Welcome aboard buddy.

Thank You.

Have a Great Day!!
