Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.
There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.
Have you seen our Members Map? You may find some pilots living near you. Feel free to add yourself to the members map too
We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.
Our Associates are able to enjoy a lot of great services for free but our Members are eligible for a whole lot more! Read all the details about our Membership Benefits?
And finally, if you are new to drones and wondering what it’s all about, have a look at Resources for a beginner.
Welcome once again!
Hey Paul, and welcome.
This is a worry that comes up quite frequently with new fliers because of YouTube clips… one of those things that’s massively overblown by ‘influencers’ looking for clicks (more often than not generating the conflict is the only reason they’re flying).
There’s a very long thread about it here: People flying drones over sensitive locations (eg. police stations ) and “auditors”
General rule of thumb is that if you adhere to Wheaton’s Law you’ll have absolutely no bother at all.
I’m a relatively new flyer, just North of London. I’ve only encountered positivity whenever anyone has approached me. Most people are genuinely interested.
I agree wholeheartedly (and laughed at) Wheaton’s Law. But it IS true. Take off and land in a quiet area, don’t fly low over people or properties and be prepared if someone does question you. Always respond politely and positively. Get yourself a laminated card with your operator/flyer ID, get insurance and then you can legitimately state that you are flying legally and with insurance - get that in early in any conversation if you feel it’s going to be a confrontational one. I keep a printout of my insurance in my bag, but have never needed to use it.
Hi Paul @Senate1 and welcome to GADC
A warm welcome in the group!
Good afternoon @Senate1 Paul welcome to the club
Where are you from ?
Hi iam from
Colwyn bay in north wales
I know Colwyn bay was there in 2019 in & around, Denbigh Snowdonia & a fair few other places, very nice part of the country lots to photo, wasn’t into droning then was just up there getting some headspace then I had to come back to reality,
Is on my list to try & visit again tho ( with the drone )
I’ll pop you location in the title if that’s ok with you it may invite others familiar to come & say hi hope you don’t mind
Hi @Senate1
I think everyone has already covered the single most important piece of advice you need
Hey @Senate1 Im new to flying as well, ive not had anything negative from people whilst flying. Generally people seem interested
Hi Paul @Senate1 - welcome to GADC from south Wales

I moved he about 20 years ago,as you say nice part of the country and as my main hobby is photography theres lots to do
Hope its like that for me
Hi Paul @Senate1, welcome to the club. I had Drone Anxiety too when I just started, but as people have said, most encounters tend to be positive. I have my flyer I’d and insurance with me along with the CAA printout of who can fly where. It will be rare that you need it but good to have.
Welcome aboard Paul!
Wheatons law… brilliant!!
Hi Paul @Senate1, and welcome to the group. Please don’t be discouraged by videos you may see on youtube, or stories you may read. There will always be a Karen, but @Foley (Russ, my Hubby) find that a lot of people are interested, and if you let people know what you’re doing, they usually ask questions and enjoy watching the flight. You made a gret choice with the DJI Mini 4 Pro.
As @FoleyMrs says. On most occasions we get approached by people asking about the drones and showing an interest. I sometimes say to people that I will not be flying near them so no need to worry, this in turn makes them feel that you are more of a responsible flyer. In all our time I think me met one. It was a little moan and that was it. A lot of the things on the internet are there to exaggerate things. Once you have been out a few times your confidence will grow. Welcome to the group and a fun hobby.
Thank you both for your replys ,I will defo take on board what you have both said and we’ll see how it goes
No probs
