Hi all — I’m Joe, based in Kent. I’ve recently taken up the hobby. My love of rotary‑wing flight goes back to my teenage years flying a Hirobo Shuttle RC helicopter. These days I’m all about the joy of flying and photography/videos rather than building, and I’m fascinated by the perspectives drones open up — especially the video and photo angles you simply can’t get any other way.
I love engaging with the public when I’m out flying, sharing the countryside from a fresh viewpoint and helping people feel comfortable with the hobby. Lately I’ve been photographing local churches and churchyards, using the drone to place each building in its wider landscape, then pairing the footage with music I create in Suno and editing everything in DaVinci Resolve (steep learning curve, but worth it).
For me the drones have become companions in exploring the countryside. I also ride motorcycles, which pairs brilliantly with flying trips — when family time allows.
Looking forward to being part of the group and learning from everyone.
Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.
There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.
We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.
And finally, if you are new to drones and wondering what it’s all about, have a look at Resources for a beginner.
Welcome Joe, from another newbie in Maidstone, Kent. I found https://dronescene.co.uk/ really useful for finding local sites. In fact I added my own site last weekend, a lovely church called St Margaret’s just outside Maidstone. Give it a view if you like churches.
