Hobbyist Drone Insurance Investigations ... June 2019

@Beejay I’ve moved your post over to this thread as this question is asked on a regular basis :+1:t2:

Hoping to join the Drone world very soon
A complete novice but watching my son in laws before all this recent craziness.
I want I want :relaxed:
Investigating all my options and I am looking at the Mavic Mini.
Joined various Facebook drone groups and watching lots of YouTube videos for advice.
My slightly paranoid wife asked about insurance, not insurance for a stolen or broken drone, but Personal Liability Insurance.
She made the valid point a drone falling from the sky and hitting a person or property could open me up to being sued.
I have to be honest I hadn’t thought about it or really seen anything insurance related mentioned anywhere, apart for professionals.
What is the advice and opinions of insurance for a leisure drone flier ?
Thank you in advance for any help :+1:t2:

FPVUK do a Public Liabilty Insurance when you join for £20.
Covers you for £5 million.

Although unnecessary in your case, it is advisable (only if you fly with prop guards)to register your drone.
This can also be done through their website.

As mentioned BMFA or FPVUK. I’m with the BMFA but only as it’s the preferred policy of my flying club and not because I consider it it anyway better than that offered by FPVUK.

I have witnessed how quick the BMFA have acted on a claim. Last year a club member experienced loss of control of a medium sized petrol powered model. It crashed into a neighbouring property and caused some structural damage. Just a couple of days later the damage had been assessed and repaired under the insurance scheme.

Like all policies you need to read very carefully the requirements and exclusions. The BMFA policy is probably more tailored to fixed flying sights rather than more commando style flying.

I am curious as to how an independent insurer, e.g. those that appear during YT vids, would handle such a case as my experience with similar car insurance companies has shown they’ll try to use a multitude of different interpretations to wriggle out of their responsibilities, especially if it’s a sizeable injury claim.

Example.

In my case I was rear ended while stationary at the scene of an accident. And even though there were blue lights flashing everywhere the Chav in his Corsa was too interested in his phone and slammed into me. His insurance company tried to claim that as the place I was stopped at was not an official stopping place (road junction, traffic light, pedestrian crossing, etc) I was illegally stopped and that they, nor their client, were liable. However the statements from the police, fire, and ambulance, crews in attendance had a completely different interpretation and were more than happy to make their thoughts known.

Obviously flying a drone has different risks associated with it but none the less I have no doubt that some companies offering “specialised” policies will try to use even the most tenuous reference to evade their responsibilities.

Nidge.

Thank you, very interesting :+1:t2:

Good advice, thanks :+1:t2:

Thanks :+1:t2:

Good Morning,

As a new member, I wanted to make sure I have all the boxes ticked and was wondering if as a hobbyist what if any insurance should I get to cover my drone. I intend to get as much flying time as possible over the next 3 months and want to make sure that if an accident happens I am covered.

Thanks

Terry

As a hobbyist for public liability join fpvuk membership (costs about £20) includes 5M public liability. If you want to insure the drone against fly aways and crashes try cover drone.

WOWsers.

Just been told my drone insurance renewal is due in a few weeks. It has doubled in price (from £45 to £94) on a drone that has lost over a third of its original value, and I’d image with the MA2 being out there will be a glut of cheaper MA’s available should the worst happen.

So, that will be a No thanks Eversure.

What about your third party / public liability cover ?
Do you have that with somebody else?

I don’t have any truth be told.

Which makes joining one of the clubs more likely

I just got a quote from coverdrone for 175!

At that rate - in the 8 years I’ve had drones - I would have paid out more than a brand new M2Z!!!
Where’s the incentive?

I also have an MA, now just out of cover with the well-known FlyIcarus. I have renewed my FPVUK membership for the PLI cover as injuring a third party with a drone is something I do not want to do but, if it should happen, I definitely do not want to have to face the financial penalties alone.

I like my MA and would be very sorry to lose it. But I also have a slowly changing menagerie of Inspires, Droidworx, S900s and homemade mongrels that would cost stupid money to insure for loss… So I am not going to seek insurance for any of them but will bear any costs myself.

And I expect to save money!

THIS.

I years ago stopped paying for boiler, etc type breakdown and instead put the same amount into an ‘emergency cover’ account. Not used it once and it’s looking very healthy should we need something fixed.
