Looking for my first FPV Mini….advise please

Good afternoon all.

Hoobieist here that loves my DJI Neo.

I really want to explore and learn to fly FPV and was wondering if anyone could direct, or possibly selling, a mini whoop.

I have the DJI goggles 3 and controller 3 so would love a little unit that i can link to these without having to buy another comparable set.

I know the Neo does FPV but if i use it and kill it, my missus would kill me, so was hoping for something small to use indoors.

Just in case, in regards to simulator, i only have an iPad and i think finding a comparable simulator that i can use my current control on is limited to low and zero.

Anyway if anyone has any advise or direction be great to hear from you.

regards

Motion Controller 3 or the FPV Controller 3

If the former you are out of luck I’m afraid

I’m a bit sketchy on DJI stuff, so others will have to help me out, but if you’re looking for “something small to use indoors” you’re probably stuck with something like,

Which looks like it’ll be okay with your goggles:

But given that it says it’s ELRS, I’ve no idea if you can use the DJI FPV remotes or not.
(Edit: it looks like you can: How to Setup DJI Remote Controller 3 and O4 Air Unit in Betaflight FPV Drones - Oscar Liang - good old Oscar)

From a brief look, a DJI FPV 3, assuming it’ll work with the likes of the Meteor65, will set you back ~£140 (but it will also work with your neo), whereas a Radiomaster Pocket ELRS is ~£65.

Don’t forget you’ll also need batteries

and a charger

So…
Whoop £180
Controller £140 (of course, you may already have this)
Batteries £23
Charger £25
TOTAL £368 … Bargain!

As @Playtripper says, analogue is all cheaper but you’d need to get everything:

Whoop (Meteor65 analogue) £90
Goggles…um…Eachine EV800 £80
RM Pocket ELRS £65
Batteries £23
Charger £25
TOTAL £283

It is complicated. :slightly_smiling_face:

First choice is analog vs digital. For what you are describing (a whoop for indoors) if you had asked a year ago the only good options were analog, but with the DJI O4 camera you do now have a few options and it should be compatible with your existing goggles which means a big saving as those are the most expensive kit.

The BetaFPV Meteor 65 Pro and 75 Pro are getting great reviews, if I didn’t already have 6 drones (including a Neo) I would have bought one by now! Check out YouTube. Most of the UK suppliers seem sold out but check EBay.

There are other good reviews eg Flywoo Firefly 16 and 18, but they don’t have prop guards and I would say you want those indoors because you will crash into everything but more importantly everyone so you want that protection.

I would say use 1s models for indoors, I also have a 2s Pavo Femto but it is a bugger to control indoors, too powerful.

Then there is analog. Everything is much cheaper (camera £15-20 vs £100 for an O4) so crashing and replacing stuff is fairly painless. Any whoop with prop guards will take a good beating but will eventually break). I have a Happymodel Mobula7 which I use as daily flyer indoors and love it, highly recommend.

But…if you go analog you probably need a dedicated set of goggles as the later DJIs don’t have external inputs for an analog module.

So in short, it is complicated!

Second this one

I have both thankfully

Thank you so much.

I’ll have a look at the Meteor 65/75 and see if any are available so at least i don’t have another set of goggles and controller taking space.

Although the thought of getting an analog and not being to fussed on its damage is also a good idea.

really appreciate your time in reporting.

This is a great reply with very helpful info and links.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply with all that.

I’ll also keep an eye out for anyone selling a compatable unit.

Thanks again

I also agree, this would be an ideal transition from the Neo.

If you don’t have the DJI FPV Controller 3, save yourself some cash and get a Radiomaster Pocket (approx £60 plus £12-£15 for the batteries)
It’s an ELRS controller, which will work with any FPV quad or wing, as long as they have an ELRS receiver.

You can pick up a Meteor 75 pro from around £60 from Banggood, without the VTX / O4 lite air unit.
The DJI O4 air unit (O4 lite not the O4 pro) will cost £99.00 without any form of discount. (Check members discount codes if your a silver or gold member)
It easy peasy to install yourself, no soldering, just plug in the VTX into the FC and fit the canopy with the supplied 4x screws.

I also second this, I have the Pocket radio and am super happy with it. I would say that making the jump to ELRS for the controller is fairly cheap and will pay off over the longer term rather than using DJI which are way more expensive and compatible with fewer drones.

Short story: ELRS is the default option for controller and the Radiomaster Pocket is a great entry level option, then choose your camera system to suit you.

And don’t forget have fun!

@Playtripper @TheBinman

While we’re all super happy with our Pockets, and they’re a great choice, @Sebm already has the DJI FPV Controller 3, so isn’t their cheapest first step is going to be an O4 whoop? And when the addiction kicks in, if they stick with O4 systems that may be all they need? As I said at the beginning, I don’t have any DJI FPV stuff, so maybe I’ve picked it up wrong.

Now, if we’re talking about sims, it looks like the DJI controller doesn’t like iOS, so that’s a whole other kettle of fish.

Cheap easy start up basher set up

You will still need more batts and charger

I’ve used my DJI fpv controller 2 with a few sims
Uncrashed and liftoff are two that work fine and I’m sure others will. So I assume the 3 will work in the same way.

The controller 3 will work with the 04 pro,
03 and I think the lite too instead of using ELRS - keeping cost down.

Can you ever have enough batteries? :joy:

I would think so, but…

and I happened across this (among other videos demonstrating its use on PC sims)…

You are absolutely right of course, I am really just saying that in the grand scheme of things switching to ELRS for about £65 unlocks you from DJI and that may give you many cheaper options in future. I see DJI like Apple, they make great stuff that “just works” but boy do they charge a premium for it!

But definitely you could just go for DJI controller model and save a few quid, at least as far as I know.

While I do have a DJI camera drone and a Neo, for FPV I use exclusively ELRS for controllers (even where I use an O4 VTX) so I can’t speak from direct experience there, maybe others can chime in on DJI FPV controllers.

Good spot mate. I saw iOS and assumed it meant MacBook rather than iPad. In which case I believe you need to spend some more money.

Have you noticed how all “getting into FPV” threads end up like this?

That’s a given.
