Thanks Barrie. I still have hope! It’s just a pain in the backside of a place to get to - and the weather is terrible. Hopefully when the conditions improve, I will have better luck
At least there’s not much rain forecast for next week … though some cold windy shit tomorrow.
Hopefully the wind will dry things a bit.
I really admire your tenacity on this, Chris, and all the expertise of other members brought to bear on analysis.
All the best with the next steps, and hoping for a good result!
I read above that he forgot to position himself before take-off to “go down after losing signal”. So I’m assuming it had the default RTH after signal lost. Even if it is set to ‘descend upon loss of signal’, the drone will not land as the rough terrain detection system will operate and the drone is waiting for manual confirmation. The wind will bear it at this time. I have practiced this several times. The only solution is to stick tape on the VPS sensor. I will continue to convince you that the drone is much farther away. Unless it’s stuck in the mud forever.
You need to be better prepared for these tests. Truly I tell you, even in ATTI mode, the drone has the HP position after the signal status, because the GPS in the background is working. That’s why it stabilizes as quickly as you switch it to Normal. I know he was in sport mode, but you can also see that in the last two seconds he flew 30m, but backwind.

Chris @clinkadink for what it’s worth my thoughts are that is lodged in the trees here
Or there abouts, good luck anyway.
I thought (and still think) the same. But I have searched that area (in, under, up the trees) for hours. I have also flown over and down the side at 5 mph, and watched it back. Nothing. It is quite dense in there, so of course, I could have missed it. Logically, it has to be around there, otherwise why did it reconnect 5 times when I walked past that spot on a few occasions, about 15-20 mins after the Mini 2 went down.
That was pretty much my thinking.
But, on Friday, when the early evening sky was bright, I spent a lot of time looking up through all those trees, the branches and twigs of which were superbly silhouetted against a light sky. (Almost no foliage.)
Doesn’t mean I missed seeing it, but the conditions were perfect for seeing a regular shaped object in amongst the twiggery.
Also scoured the ground, too, since 6 satellites suggest it wasn’t high up at the end.
So thats 3 of us at least that have extrapolated to the same area.
Anyone got a sniffer dog.
A sniffer Goshawk would be ideal!
Not sure how I can prepare better for a Mini 2 in Atti mode in Storm Eunice at 100 mph
The drone was set to decend upon disconnect. This works, because I use it every time I do I speed test. I.e. when the RC loses connection, instead of trying to head into the wind and return to home, it always decends. This is a fact.
Yes, I flew 30m backwards in the last 2 seconds, even in Sports mode. You will note that I also drifted hundreds of meters in sports mode when I took off. And that was with no forward stick. When it is this windy, no amount of onboard GPS positioning will keep you from drifting.
Can we not organise a national meet in the field?
Of course being a soft southerner, I will require a hotel and full English breakfast each day
Full video ‘above the trees’ is available for download here, but it is 3.5GB.
Some shots of the side of the trees, with the T-junction visible behind. I.e. the spot where the RC reconnected 5 times.
I’ve spent 20 mins on a high res screen scanning these pics and can’t find anything discernable unfortunately… So so wish I could report otherwise
Probably a long shot, but I thought this might look like something in the top photo. It looks to be Mini-coloured at least…
That does look mini shape!
No, that isn’t it. It’s actually about the size of your thumb, in reality. Bits of polythene caught on the barbed wire fence. Good shout though.
Whoops, you were referring to the item on the left. Apologies. Yes, it does look a possible contender.
