Mavic Air 2 RTH issue?

The only way to build trust is to try things, like Chris said.

Id stand in a field set the return to home height to 5-10 meters send it off about 20 meters away and switch off. Least then you have a chance of running after it.

Note: take fishing net :+1:

If you took off from gravel, it should be able to rth without issues. My concern would be if you took off from reinforced (the type with steel meshing in it) concrete, the metal could affect the drones ability to sense its correct position at take-off and there would therefore be an error in position when you rth.

I’ll be giving this a go as soon as possible, might have to take someone with me just so they can film any chase for a laugh… Cine mode just to keep its speed down otherwise there will be a remake of the gif :joy::joy:

Ah, could being near a thick mesh fence cause the same? I took off about 2m away from the fenced off area, on its return it flew passed the take off point, over the fence and started coming down a few metres away. As soon as I realised every entrance to the area was locked, landing was cancelled and flew back to somewhere I could easily retrieve it.

Sorry but it don’t work like that…

Plus your drone doesn’t just rely on GPS for its home position. It takes an image of its home point, the GPS position will guide it pretty close but its home image will be the final defined position. So you should allow a little time in hover to develop a good image, the use of a defined mat will help immensely…

There’s lots of issues that will affect the accuracy of the landing… The surface material, paternation, texture, sunlight etc…

Just land manually lol in the unlikely event that RTH cuts in, walking 3ft to retrieve it i think is more than doable. if not, take a stick, reach out and drag it back to your feet.

Others may know better than I, but tbh I wouldn’t think that a fence 2 m away would affect the drone in that way.

I think I’d try again, but this time lift-off and hover at around 7m for 30 seconds or so before going out to fly.

Hope it works fine next time!

I’m definitely going to try it again, just for test purposes but I will be sticking to manual landing as much as possible. I think I was just concerned as I have only had experience with a friend’s drone, the mini, which seemed to land on the same spot it took off from every time even without any hovering time but at the same time, I know the mini doesn’t have all the sensors that the air 2 has so understandable why it’s worth hovering for a while before flight.

Does this explain why when my wife leaves for work in the morning she often ends up returning to the young single mans house four doors down the street? Do I need to fit a new SatNav in her car? Or should I be employing the services of a good solicitor?

In all seriousness GPS doesn’t work like that.

I hand launch and land everytime now after having some issues with unsuitable take off/landing grounds. When I have used RTH, mainly when I first got the MA2, it worked really well everytime landing on a sixpence. As everyone else has said I hover for 10-15 seconds while it finds its position then as soon as it says Home point is updated I’m off

On the Mavic Air 1, yes. On the Mavic Air 2 (and I guess with newer drones) you can turn the volumen off from your phone.
Best thing they did ever.

I think @ianinlondon did a video on stopping the noise the controller makes. May of been the low battery noise rather than the RTH noise… but you just tap the power button once and it shuts up. :+1:

Won’t do it my early firmware MP :slightly_frowning_face:

Gave it a test today, followed every pointer that everyone gave… Took off from a flat tree stump, hovered for around 30 seconds even though it said home point updated before I took off. Flew about taking some pictures then thought I’d see if it would come back to the spot I took off from… A lot happier now I’ve followed the pointers, nearly spot on! As I’ve said though, I won’t be wanting to make a habit of using it but good to see it’s done what I expected… Goes to show I should of read everything in the manual twice before posting here :joy:

Tryed RTH with my Air 2 today, with landing mat. Flew back fine, came down and then stopped just above mat and said ground unsutable to land lol. But would land when I took over control, will try it in a diffrent location n next run out to see if it is the mat it dose not like or it was something else.

But the good point was it came back

Could the mat have moved in wind or anything? Possibly make it appear unstable to the sensors  I’ve not used one yet but today was a tree stump, the drone decided it wanted to land next to it rather than on it, was close enough for what I was hoping would happen so can’t complain :joy: I did take over and land it on the stump though otherwise would of been cutting grass instead.

Mat was peged down, maybe due to bumpy ground around it as was in a feild ?

Gives me extras pointers for when my mat arrives. I tend to stick with fields as well so I know I’m away from people and buildings as much as possible.

Strange RTH that I noticed on Sunday, Checked and tested today at work.

On Sunday my Air 2 would not land on my Landing Mat “Unsuitable Surface” I thought it might have been on uneven ground. So today did a RTH test with Mat again in works yard. Same message again, on a flat concrete surface. So got me thinking, same drone, same landing mat but different location ?

So then tested RTH again, but this time I turned Landing Mat over and this time it came back and landed. Without any problems…So why dose the Air 2 not like Hi-Viz orange lol as when it landed ok it was with the black side of the landing mat facing up ?
