Meetup at Southmoor Nature reserve, Havant, South East at 13:30 on Sunday, 12th October 2025

Hey Rob @macspite You have met me haven’t you? Can’t believe you would allow anyone my size to sit on your tailgate! :scream:

Nik @Nik469 She can’t as she will be at home cooking our Sunday Roast :crossed_fingers: :heart_hands:

Nice of you not to mention that I’m not quite as slim as I might be - and it takes my weight!

I have interrogated street view for wheelchair suitability, as it shows the main car park area and sea wall path, and it looks pretty good to me.
Knowing that location as you hopefully do, does that seem a fair interpretation, or is there something obviously restrictive for chairs not shown on the old streetview imagery?
I ask because I am contemplating bringing my wife to the seaside for the weekend where she can watch me and others flying drones. Isn’t she lucky?

There are two parts to the car park. The upper area, achieved by turning right up a tarmac drive after passing under the car park entrance with a turning circle once at the top of the slight hill which will provide views of people flying drones and glimpses of the harbour.

The lower car park is also tarmac, the surface degrades to firm ground with chippings by the sea wall. There are pathways in both directions which appear solid and suitable for wheelchair use.

Can i suggest that she is given the opportunity to fly a drone for herself so she can see how addictive watching the controller screen maintaining visual line of sight can be?

If you can’t dig out a spare aircraft I am sure one of us can be of help

Thanks Nik, she’ll likely take a walk to the sewage works, being a drainage engineer!

Thats great, thanks.
Confirms the streetview imagery, which does look pretty suitable.

I’ll start looking at our options before I tell her what I am planning.

I’m thinking about attending this meetup @macspite

If your driving down south for a weekend kinda thing.

I was impressed with the Gosport coast

Search Alverbank west carpark.

A couple of military sites to be aware of but its right on the water. A reasonable stretch of road with various spots to stop.

Nope, any time but preferably Sunday afternoon’s :crossed_fingers:

Whelp..

One final early start for me tomorrow before the car goes back..

Calshot sunrise then maybe a swift return to Gosport

Thanks for the tips Nik. :+1:
There’s a place on Hayling Island that has caught my eye. A Saturday + Sunday night break has been kiboshed though due to me forgetting she’s booked already on Saturday :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
I need to be back for physio on Tuesday so it looks like it would only be a Sunday night stop-over, which I haven’t convinced myself yet.
I would like to experience some coastal flying though, as I bottled it in Devon in May because I didn’t understand the rules correctly. Thanks to GADC, I now know what the yellow area along the whole of the Devon coastline actually means.

Where on Hayling has caught your eye?

Having lived here 30 plus years I know a few places on the island if you need a native guide.

I was there this evening for a lovely sunset. :sun:

Langstone Quays, which looks as though it is very accessible and has nice facilities too.
Or is it a case of looks can be deceiving and locals advise elsewhere?
You really can’t beat local knowledge though, so how long or short a barge pole do you reckon?

Ah, my mistake, I thought you were talking about places to fly. No good asking a local about accomodation - don’t use it.

Most of my overnights when working have been in Travelodge or similar. Unexciting but pretty uniform across the Uk, you tend to know what you are getting.

Langstone Quays (pretentious name!) is the old Trust House Forte Langstone Hotel. I just looked at their website. Most of the attractions they promote aren’t on Hayling at all but are Portsmouth or Chichester. And I’m not sure that you can extract all the hotel amenties that you have paid for in a single night’s booking.

There’s a souless Premier Inn by the roundabout with the main A27 dual carriageway and flyover a dozen yards from the bedroom windows. the Bear Hotel in Havant is falling apart.

The other factor is time, it’s a bit short notice so you aren’t going to get to much of a discount. Best bet is to try a couple of comaparison sites like Trivago or Trip Advisor.

Sorry i can’t be more help

On the contrary, there is a lot of useful stuff for me there, much appreciated. :+1:

I’ll be giving it my full attention tomorrow now

Cheers

I tend to use premier inn tbh.

Go with what you know and i used to use them extensively for work. Their newer rooms come with fridges which is a plus for me. I like having cold milk on hand

That all said, all the brands are mostly to the same bed n bog standard when booking in that price range. I still find it deplorable that room prices can easily triple day to day but still…
