Hi all I’m Mike from Portsmouth , just starting out in the hobby just purchased a DJI mavic pro. Is there anyone from Portsmouth that would be interested in a meet up to do some flying or could give me some advise on the best places to go. I’ve been out once to the field behind baffins pond but got told off 3 times by random people lol , I’ve done the flyers I’d course and kept to the rules but put me off a little.

@Andrm1983 Hi welcome to the club happy flying
I think you were just unlucky. I was worried about being moaned at when I started out, but so far anyone that has approached me has asked a question, and said “cool, thanks” and off they went!
Don’t let it put you off ![]()
Hi Mike, I live near Portsmouth, I know exactly where you went flying, you said you had a DJI MPro, doing a quick check using our Good To Go App< it’s part of this site, ish… Where can I fly my drone in the UK? - Good 2 Go - Can I fly my drone here? which you would have been advised to use before flying, please tell me you have the CAA licence and Flyer ID…? and Operator ID…
anyway, no you cannot fly that drone in that place as there are a fair few people about and houses quite close by, see below, you will have trouble finding anywhere actually in Portsmouth to fly it as it is over 250g, but there are a few places, see where can I fly on website
This is what comes back for your flying, assuming you dont have A2 CofC or Article 16 accreditation.
I may be able to meet up once I know your Licence status, my Mum lives around the corner… ha-ha… she was probably one of the people who told you you couldn’t fly there, normally we all ignore, but in this instance, unknowingly they were right.
Cheers
Hi thanks for your reply , I have a flyer Id that’s about it at the moment , I did check on a group on Facebook before I went flying and was advised as long as I stay 50m from uninvolved people I would be fine. I kept it around 200ft at the very end of the field well away from the pond end of that makes sense.
Least I know now the information was incorrect and appreciate you letting me know.
Could you confirm exactly what I need to get so not to get in trouble again. ( the people that was unhappy was all men and seemed to be more concerned about being filmed with out permission.
Thanks

I find it strange that people are so tetchy about possibly being filmed by a drone when out in public. Do they worry about all the CCTV cameras in shops? Video door bells? Dash cams? or even people generally taking pics with their phones?
What is it about a drone that makes them get all uptight?
It’s what keeps Karen and Ken happy.
Hi, well you need an Operator ID, £10 from the CAA website, that ID needs to be written on your drone, info is also on their site.
You need to use the Good To Fly App from here,
I’ll have a think about a few good places and get back to you but if you follow the Drone Scene bits you should be fine, and get an Operator ID… Cheers
Thanks for the reply operator Id is now sorted appreciate the help!
Hi, did you find somewhere suitable… this was my first flight, away from everyone, easy to park, not far to walk and surrounded at a safe distance by trees… good luck
What 3 Words ///tins.video.edge// park by the slipway and footpath through trees.
