Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.
There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.
We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.
And finally, if you are new to drones and wondering what it’s all about, have a look at Resources for a beginner.
Welcome once again!
Keep an eye out .. there are occasional meetups around the Portchester/Hayling area.
Welcome ![]()
There are often meetup in and around Portsmouth so keep an eye out.
You didn’t say if you’re new to drones in general so forgive me if this sounds like a granny and egg thing but do be aware of the naval establishments around your area. Dronescene gives details but the mod plod don’t play when it comes to flying over their territory.
Hi Sean @seansean - welcome to GADC

Hi Sean,
If you join the South-East Group you will get notifications of local meetups.
Gosport has two main “no fly” areas. One is the old Daedalus, now Solent Airport. Fareham Council want a ridiculous fee for permission to fly in that FRZ.
The second is Fleetlands. The guys there are far more reasonable and will try and help if they can. They operate Mon-Fri 9 to 5 normally so requests for OOH flights arenormally approved.
As you are a Gold member you will be able to see the various recommended locations on Drone Scene and also message other members - contact me if you want Fleetlands details.
I know somebody who informed them of flying in the FRZ but told them where to go in regards to paying for permission…
CAP722c is your weapon of choice for that!
Welcome @seansean to GADC.
Hi and thank you.
I’m not new to drones as such. I used to have a phantom 4 pro when they first came out, but life took over etc! ended up selling it.
Only very recently getting back into them, so I thought I would not bother with the larger drones as I have no need for them and decided to go for the neo 2. So just quietly re-learning everything. Got my flyer and op id as well as gold membership from here. So I’m pretty much ready to go.
Hi,
Yeah I was already aware of the local restrictions. I dont see the point of flying by an airport with a drone! Just go sit and watch the planes instead. If I wanted pictures I would take a normal camera with a long lens!
Thank you
Thank you
Neither do I.
But there is a lot of land which is ivolved in an airport FRZ and there is rather more on it than just an airfield.. Solent and Fleetlands together create No-Fly over various good vantage points over Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, and cover all of Lee-on-Solent and most of Fareham.
