New from Thirsk area, North Yorkshire

Hello everyone… I’m completely new to drones & I’m trying my best to keep my spending within reasonable bounds (as much as is possible when joining the FPV world). Because I come from an Open Source background, I’m interested in building my own kit (I’m passable at 3D Design in OnShape & I have a 3D Printer). Currently I own a BetaFPV Air75 & some LAVA 1S 550mAh batteries, although my order unfortunately clashed with the Lunar New Year & is apparently still stuck on a slow boat from China, so I don’t actually have it in my hands yet. When it finally arrives, I’ll upgrade my membership to Silver so that I’ve got the proper insurance. I’ve already passed the test & got my CAA Operator ID & CAA Flyer ID, so that’s all ticked off already. I’m using Velocidrone to get some practice in, as my flying ability (crashing ability?) is a work in progress, & it’s free to crash horribly in a SIM whilst I’m learning (promising signs of improvement though).
I believe that the last bit of kit that I need to get airborne is my goggles. At the moment, I’m planning on buying a pair of Skyzone Cobra SD 5.8GHz FPV Goggles, but I’d appreciate a last bit of advice before I start spending money.
As soon as I get my drone & my goggles, I’ll get my son to pass his own test & get his CAA Flyer ID which will give me my Spotter - although it’s debatable who’ll spend more time spotting: him or me?
I’ve also got a BetaFPV 5in1 FC and a C03 Camera sat on my desk, waiting for me to find some inspiration & buy a set of motors. I might build something like an Air65 - yes, I know that buying one off the shelf is cheaper & easier, but it wouldn’t teach me anything…
So, lots of fun & games planned, soon… but for now, still at the planning stages…

Welcome to GADC

Hello from sunny Blackpool

A big welcome to GADC from sunny Doncaster.

Your post has made me realise that my Pavo 20 Pro is likely to take another 3-4 weeks to reach my hands  … I ordered on the 9th Feb.

Hi Justin @JustinSB - welcome to GADC :+1: :+1: :+1:

Hi Justin. Welcome

Hello and welcome! I would advise to move to DJI O4, or as a secondary option walksnail… the days of analog are gone (at least for most use cases).

I advice against printing frames, even in carbon infused pla… but hey, you will always find options that work more or less.

Enjoy! Keep the questions flowing, and we’ll try to help.

Ps you don’t need to have insurance, but if you fly much and take risks… but necessarily a bad idea.

Welcome @JustinSB from Leyland. Lancashire

Hi Justin and welcome.
With this hobby everytime you look into something you open a can of worms. If you go down the camera drone route which drone do you buy, which options other than DJI will give me a similar bang for buck.
THEN you open up the whole worm factory by going down FPV. True as @ORB_FPV has said analouge is on it’s way out, BUT not so much if you are flying the whoops such as the Air 65 or 75. Also if you want to build a basher drone then with a couple of weeks wait using analouge all up can be done for under £100 as you will already have a TX and goggles ( plus most analouge goggles will gave HDMI in so they are great for plugging into the pc for flying the sim. So don’t discount the analouge.
However, if you choose to go digital the you really can’t go wrong with DJI air units. The clarity and quality of the picture is phenomenal, plus penetration is good as well. And probably the most cost effective way of picking up some dji goggles is buying a second hand avata 2 to get the goggles 3, or the v1 avata for goggles integra or goggles 2.
Just out of curiosity which transmitter did you opt for?
On the slow boat from china front i ordered 3 things at the start of Jan the first has just landed in the UK.

Anyway welcome aboard from not so Sunny Morecambe.

Welcome to G A D C

I got a RadioMaster Pocket Crush Radio Controller. It seemed to be a good starter controller & I can pass it on to my son when I upgrade.

Analogue may be on its way out, but everyone needs to start somewhere, & that’s where I’ve had to start. My good lady wife spends her days being a hard-nosed corporate accountant, & this often impacts upon my own ability to gratuitously spend money on fun (but allegedly unnecessary) things. Alas, I just can’t slip purchasing a digital FPV system under the radar. Yet.

Like ya thinking.
Nothing wrong with the pocket. My lad has a pocket.
To be fair although my 5" fpv are digital i do have a 3" which is analogue, and intenx to build more so i don’t cry when i crash.
