Hi Ted @ted105 and welcome to GADC :+1: :+1:

Good morning @ted105 welcome to the club :+1:

Hi @ted105 Ted - welcome to GADC from just down the road Swansea way :+1: :+1: :+1:

Just get the CAA Flyer ID and keep 50m away from everbody. Go open spaces.

Hi Ted . Im up the road in Monmouthshire. Have several areas where i practice including Garway Hill and Blorenge Mountain. Its easy to get miles from anyone and park nearby. Let me know if you want coordinates or postcode

Croeso Ted … and bore da from Bridgend.

There are loads of places to fly, but the base advice above of keep 50m away and find open spaces is a great start. Me, I prefer to head to the beaches we have but if you stay around Cardiff you’d have to be aware of the Heliport & Cardiff airport. Also, to a lesser degree RAF St Athan. But head east, west or north of Cardiff and we have loads of open spaces.

You don’t mention where in Cardiff you are, nor if you have transport but you could try re-asking and tagging in @group-wales to ask locals. It’s worth joining the group as well [just click the link and then join] as it is always possible someone organises a group flight near you.

Other than that, do you know any famers you can ask to borrow a field from for a few hours?

495 grams…

Because it’s sub 500g, with A2CofC (A2 certificate of compitence) you’ll be able fly in built up areas as long as you don’t intentionally fly over people. It costs less than £100, lasts 5 years. There are a bunch of companies you can do it with. I did mine with www UAV8.co Done in a day.

if you are a member of the grey arrows you can get discount on the A2C of C. https://greyarro.ws/t/uav-academy-a2-cofc-training-exclusive-discount-for-grey-arrows-drone-club-members/60082

Yay, another Cardiff boy! Welcome to the club, bwtti bach!

My drone is a DJI Mini 2, which being less than 250g is subject to less restriction than your HS 720. If you can get out of town to hilltops and beaches your life will be much easier, but the parks are flyable at quiet times (you need to keep 50m away from people other than those involved in the flying, and 150 from buildings). Llandaff/Pontcanna Fields, Roath Park Rec, top end of Hailey Park perhaps, but not on Saturday mornings when everybody’s playing football or rugby and their families stand on the sidelines shouting at them. Go for midweek schooltime when it’s only dog walkers.

Drone Scene will show you places to fly, and has a q & a to fill out to establish if you are ‘legal’ to fly at any particular location. It’s map shows Flight Restricted Zones in red; these are airports*, military bases and gunnery/bombing ranges)**, prisons, and royal residences. Blue areas are NOTAMs, notices to airmen, temporarily restricted areas for events, flying displays, light shows, balloon festivals and such; the dates, times, and conditions will be shown if you click on the area. In yellow are ‘ground hazard areas’, which are locations in which you need to be aware of possible issues but are ok to fly from and over. Parks are often shown thus because crowds may congregate in them at times, as are busy roads, railways, and Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Some SSSI’s are denominated as such because of rare plants or geological features, but others need to be avoided when birds are nesting. Overflying them at 400’ is probably not going to be a problem, though! Other ground hazards such as towers, pylons, masts, and such are shown as icons. Purple is Crown Estate land where you are allowed to fly unrestricted, mostly inter-tidal beaches and sandbanks.

National Trust, English/Scottish Heritage, CADW, and water authorities including Welsh Water/Dwr Cymru don’t like you flying over their property and prohibit taking off or landing (TOAL) there, but the CAA is in control of airspace and you can overfly them to your heart’s content.

*Permission can be obtained from the relevant Air Traffic Control tower; they need you to fill in an online form, then phone them when you start to fly and again when you’ve finished.

**Some of the ranges, including Sennybridge and Castle Martin, publish firing tmes when they are closed, but can be used otherwise in permitted locations such as Elugug Stacks (South Pembrokeshire coast) when there is no firing in progress. Don’t fly over the fenced off area, you’ll be shot down.

Hello and welcome from the South. I know nothing about drones  but with the help of the great guys both at the Meets, which are fun, and here, I’m learning. Youll find the answer to almost anything… perhaps not ‘ the meaning of life’ though!!!
