Newbie from Cambridge

Hi folks. I am just starting out and looking to have some fun in FPV. My son and I have been playing with our Neo for the last 3 months and finally deciding that we want to do FPV quads. As I’ve been researching - I think I might actually start off with our first buy being a fixed wing but no idea where to start.

We just bought a Radiomaster Boxer Crush remote and battery. We have only been playing on FPV skydive on my iPad with a switch controller so far. So, going to try out the new remote to see how much fun that is then take it from there.

Very lost ATM with regard to which route we want to go. One day perhaps 5” acro but for now, perhaps a Pavo femto using 04 air unit and goggles 3.

Can you use ELRS with an RC plane? Can you use DJI Vtx protocols with a plane? I’d like to have something cheap to start by flying then add in VTX once we have some more cash to burn then go Quads when we have even more to burn.

Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.

There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.

We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.

Yes and Yes.

Also be prepared to break the bank on FPV its an expensive game, especially with digital systems.

Also look at some simulators, Lift off and Velocidrone are probably the 2 most popular and should both work with your boxer radio and will give you a far better feel for flying full manual.

personally I would probably just pick either quads or planes to start with as both are very different and doing both right off the bat with limited knowledge is just making your learning curve way steeper than it needs to be.

The learning curve is steep enough for a beginner as it is on each of the options doing both is just asking for confusion and frustration.

You’re in good hands here though some very knowledgeable members, check out the Racing Quads, Self-builds & FPV category and have a read through some of others members beginners journeys :+1:t2: for an idea of what to expect going into this hobby :+1:t2:

I decided on drones in the end.. perhaps fixed wing can come another time. I’ve started in Uncrashed with my Radiomaster Boxer Crush and kind of suck as a pilot. Nothing too unusual there I guess. I’ve done about 3 hours in the simulator now. Now downloaded Brodie’s (Youtube) PIG course and slowly feel like I am making some progress. I also downloaded a workshop drone model like the one I’ve bought which seems fun to fly.

I’ve bought a BetaFPV Pavo Femto to get started from Ali Express and 4 LAVA 2s batteries.

Currently chucking in a bid or 2 for a pair of Goggles 3 on Ebay so waiting to see if I am successful or not. Would like a pair for £450ish. I’ll see how I get on with the Femto and then if I catch the bug, I’d like to build a 5inch freestyle drone.

I also appear to have bought a basher buggy for my 6 year old boy to justify having something to chase in the fields and to give my wife a reason for me picking up this hobby while my back recovers from a squash injury.

Anything I am missing or haven’t thought of?
