Newbie here in Tamworth

Just got my flyer and operator ID, just looking round at different drones now, looking around the £300 mark, any suggestions and any locals?

Hi @Prab1975 and welcome to Grey Arrows :wave:t2:

I’d look at a new DJI Mini 4K or a second hand DJI Mini 3 Pro I think

Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.

Hi from sunny Blackpool. I’ve been near there to play with steam trains, Statfold Barn. Has the best “man shed” I’ve ever seen.

Im thinking of taking off from Robeys lane and flying over the open fields, once I have a drone that is

Hi @pss1 / @Prab1975

Here were my go to spots for open space in and around Tamworth

Robey’s Ln across fro Alvecote woods there is a massive farm field with a tree in it - great POI for orbits and sunsets - just watch out for the trees along the edge of the field along Robey’s Ln as I did land my Mini in one of them trees and it spent a night wild camping as a result ( can recommend a great tree surgeon to get it out haha )

Just a note - Pooley Park / Alvecote Priory are all under Warwickshire Country Council and they do not allow TOAL from there country parks - same goes for Kingsbury water park - have seen rangers at Pooley looking for drone operators in the past ( not me - was Mountain biking haha but was ask and nope I would not grass a fellow pilot in )

Another good location for views of Ventura is between Strikers / under Riverdrive towards A5 by Borrowpit Lake ( don’t go under the A5 as that is Nature reserve land and again no TOAL ) aslo keep an eye out for dog walkers and birds - great for timelapse / hyper laps video’s of cars into Ventura

Not a location I have been to but near the Castle Car Park where the River Tame and Anker meet would also be quite interesting - large open space with views of the castle. You should be OK on Lady Meadow area.

Hopwas woods I have been a few times - full of trees and quite often MOD people who may have a word with you depending on what they are doing there.

Then when you do get brave there is the Castle grounds - not done that myself but know people who have - unfortunately I don’t live quite local any more.

hope that helps you to build some confidence

Thanks for these, I would think you’d get a decent enough view of the castle from ladybridge side of the river at a decent (and legal) height

We run model boats at Kingsbury and always thought drone shots of the boats would be great, but as you say it’s not allowed at the water park

There are people who have flown from the bit of grass by the bandstand like early morning for sun rise when there is hardly anyone around and not had any issues.

So that might be an idea ?

As for the boats at Kingsbury - the Jetski club often has drones up - no idea how this works with the land owner as the Jetski club as far as I can tell do not own the land and from the signs it seems you have to be a member to be on there pitch.

The model boat pond is fenced off so maybe an ask to the rangers about flying might be possible if its by a member - never seen that pond in use but then I am generally only at KWP for park run on a Sat morning.

I have challenged Warwickshire country council a few times about being a bit more relaxed about drones and when speaking to the rangers at Pooley have said they are missing a trick here about drones as Pooley often complains about lack of footfall ( cafe owner and car parking ) yet if they had designated area’s for TOAL that could let people fly and capture things of interest then maybe they would get a few extra feet. This seems to work quite well in Scotland for the Kelpies so why not other area’s ? They seems to harp on about liability - but why should the liability sit with them ? Its not them flying the drone so it should be with the drone operator to fly within the regs and be held accountable for their actions.

Crazy world

Many thanks for the info. Know the area around robeys as had a narrow boat on the marina for a few years. Ladybridge also looks a goos bet. I will do a bit of of a recce.

Now I’ve seen your photo and realise who you are, I think we need to have a chat at the pond about getting drones in the air, and possibly imaging our boats at kingbury especially on race days. One reason for not allowing drones at kingsbury I had mentioned to me was disturbing the wild life, especially during hatching/fledging season, but could always approach chairman to liaise with KWP for limited flying time.

Im not over as much as I used to be, but be nice if we could get limited use for some of the events, tethered hydro’s would be a good one to catch with a drone
