Which filters do I need to reduce glare? Still not sure despite going through youtube vids. ND, cinematic, polarizing, these words kinda confuse my simple brain. Basically when the sun is up everything gets a ‘white-out’ bleached look. Also what numbers would you suggest ie: 8, 16, 32 etc? Thanks in advance!
I’ve never needed filters to obtain a correct exposure, not even in the brightest of Mediterranean sunshine.
The ISO range and shutter speeds are more than adequate to prevent over-exposure (“glare” as you are calling it).
Before buying filters, double check that you don’t have the ISO, shutter speed or +/-EV value manually set to a value that’s causing the over-exposure.
That is my next move OV as I’m sure it was better when I first bought the drone. I know that in my usual fumbly way I have probably tweeked EVERYTHING in settings. But I still want a filter.
I’m with ozone. You should be able to sort out most issues within the drone settings, or reframe your shot to avoid glare.
Using the histogram to put you in the ball park for post production is a good idea too.
Here is a link to a good video on filters.
I’ve got NDPL filters from 4-32 and tbh only used them 3 times, unless you use manual settings the camera will always be overexposed, that’s in my experience, I’m still playing with settings but most of my better vids have been without any filters at all
Certainly not my experience … except for the time I’d not discovered I’d wound down the EV adjustment without realising, and everything was underexposed until I corrected my error.
I know of several people that leave there’s in auto, and post excellent photos.
Mine has always been overexposed with filters on but always been spot on with no filters I meant to say bud
Hi
So what about the method of shutter speed equals twice fps to get realistic motion video?
This would mean that ND filters are almost always needed to get the exposure right.
Steve
“Correct Exposure” is the combination of ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Filters - to achieve a “correctly exposed” image. The correct total amount of light.
That his how you adjust shutter speed within the same “correct exposure”.
Hi, sorry I think your missing the point …
I am most certainly not missing any point!
The same “correct exposure” can be achieved by an absolute multitude of combinations of values for ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture and ND Filters.
The EXPOSURE, to be correct, is the same. The total amount of light per image for the selected ISO.
And, as I initially said,
Note : “A correct exposure.”
I specifically I did not say “to obtain a specific shutter speed”.
If your trying to get the sun in the shot that’s probably the problem.
Use AEB and stitch in software or HDR shot.
In an automatic mode, and including the sun within the frame, the exposure would tend to compensate for the brightness of the sun and render the other aspects of the image dark, not
Just happened to have loads of sun to play with. ![]()
I’ve seen people increase EV to bring out the shadows resulting in the sky being blown out. Thought that’s what he meant.
Drone cameras dont really have the dynamic range for sun in shots.
… hence …
We really need a sample image.
Agreed, but if you are wanting cinematic style of videos, i.e realistic, then there are rules to follow.
Below are just two examples, checkout the professional film-makers tips on YT, it’s been well published for years now
start at 7:00
start at 3:00 then when it gets irrelevant jump to 15:15

The OP has not said whether he’s talking about stills or video - and, fundamentally, that makes absolutely no odds to the issue/problem of an over-exposure.
If some setting, or other aspect of the drone, is causing the overexposure, then there’s a good chance that it will still be evident after all of that tinkering with ND filters.
Keep it simple! If the exposure is incorrect, then the cause of that needs sorting in a simple still or video first, and then (should he wish) he can delve into the world of “cinematic effect” shutter speeds.
What he said.
Video different matter
Agreed, I’m just putting the case for good video exposure.
You are all free to ignore me, I’ve got a broad back ![]()
but @OzoneVibe don’t get aggresive and bullyboy with me, just because I have a different view/opinion to you
