Portchester Castle - Finally a video I'm somewhat happy with!

The footage was still a little dark when I filmed, I think because I had an ND filter on that was too strong.
The colours could of course still be better, so my plan for my next video (when it warms up a tad) will be to stop shooting in ‘normal’ and then follow the tutorials that were recommended to me after my last video.

But, all that said, I’m reasonably happy with this one.

I grew up 5 minutes walk down Castle Street… I think the wind from the drone may have got in my eye a little! Very nice, well done.

Thanks all!

Nailed it! Enjoyed watching it!

Great video. My only suggestion would be smoother transitions, rather than a sudden jump. A short dissolve or fade, perhaps? But I’m nit-picking here.

Cracking job, well done!

Some great shots there @Camera-On. I especially like the shot when diagonally flying over the cemetery

I guess a really quick fade? I’ll try that next time - always appreciate feedback :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks! Any feedback or tips from the resident award winning drone-tographer?

Lol, who, me? I am nothing special, just happened to be in the right place with the right kit and the right weather to capture some interesting footage, and have a lot of self doubt, enough to keep refining things beyond what most would deem acceptable, my inner critic has a very loud voice…

Ok, overall it was excellent, good exposure, sharpness spot on, focus also good, and colour was where it should be. Some great set piece moves and great drone control in terms of maintaining the focus oint on pans, tracks and orbits. The intro shot is excellent…

Suggestions, and I am being extremely picky here, so please do not take offence, it is a cracking video as is…
Perhaps consider some short transitions between scenes, such as cross fade or fade to black to remove the suddeness of the jump style cuts.
The diagonal overflight looking down was great, but it felt a little too fast for me, perhaps play it at normal speed and split into 2 scenes if you dont want a longer one…
The sped up bit between the external tracking shot and the fly away at 56 seconds works well, however the pull back from there is perhaps a better pull out than the straight pull out you have used for your last shot, but both work well enough…
The tracking pan at 45 seconds where you descend and then move the gimball up, would have been smoother if the gimball had moved as you descended…

As I said, I am being hyper critical here, as I would be for myself…

No that’s all great feedback! I will definetely try another transitions. You reckon on all scenes? Or just some? I’ll probably just do a relatively quick fade to black transition

Unless there is a reson for diferent transitions - such as denoting diferent locations - then I would apply the same transition to all shots, it helps to keep it feeling related, but thats just me…

Great video. Just got my first drone, DJi Mini 4 Pro. Not had a chance to fly yet due to all the bad weather. Can someone clarify about flying around or over English Heritage or National Trust areas. I was under the impression it was prohibited. Many thanks.

Hi @pappachunk, it looks as though you’re quite new here :wave:t2:

Why not nip over to the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself. :+1:t2:

It’s not.

More information on the relevant thread over here: National Trust Policy Correspondence

It’s highly frowned upon… By English heritage.
But that’s about it from a legal standpoint - provided:

  • take off and land from a location you have permission for (most council owned land for example)
  • don’t fly too low so as to be considered a nuisance or trespass
  • observe the drone code

I’d be well happy with it @Camera-On Cameron but if you don’t mind me asking what frame rate do you use and where do you upload the footage from? The reason for me asking is some of the clips are a little juddery to me. I used to get this from slowing 30fps by 20% to get 24fps and also was using the low res files from the controller album and not those from the drone mem card (night and day difference). Fortunately someone put me right on both counts. I also just fly slower then fast using the same framing.

The other thing was mixing different fps clips on the same timeline, which often doesn’t work unless you have something like Optical Flow with speed warp or some other interpolation software. You can mitigate with speed changes and stabilisation but its a poor second.

Regardless of the rambling above, I thought it was great but could have been perfect. :hugs:

This footage I think should’ve all been shot at 60fps.
The only bit that has been sped up, it’s the diagonal top down shot.

Do you have an example of a clip that is stuttering for you?

Thanks for the feedback otherwise :slightly_smiling_face:
