Also make sure props are removed while you’re working on it on the bench. Safety first and all that
Oooops… Channel 5
I’m away until Thursday with work, I’ll post then on what I see but if I remember there were four bars along the bottom in the screen that moved (digitally) when I move the lever. But the quad motors are not energised.
So you have binded the remote then.
You could provide useful information like betalight (or INAV) model/make of receiver and flight controller.
I used beta flight and I have a speedybee F405 stack (V3 FC)
Receiver - Happy model ep1
transmitter I have Radiomaster Boxer (built in elrs)
you seem very close
As Stevie mentioned earlier - an easy thing to miss is that you need to have one of the radio switches mapped to ‘Channel 5’ (Channel 1 to 4 are the sticks - Channel 5 must be set for arming).
Have a look at the Boxer - use the Page buttons to reach the Channel Monitor and make sure you can see the Channel 5 reacting to one of your switches. If not - you need to map your switches.
Only Channel 5 is mandatory but tbh you will likely end up using most of the switches so you may as well map all of them
To map in there go to the Model page and use the page button to get to the Mixes page.
Note the Arm switch can only be one the 2-positions switches (top left, left shoulder or top right)
When the radio is transmitting on Channel 5 - next thing you may have missed is to setup the Arming function. In betaflight - go to the Modes tab with the quad plugged in. The top box will be the arming box - click on ‘Add Range’ and then move your Channel 5 switch on the radio and it should be picked up. Set the slider so that you are happy with the switch position.
There is a security so it will not arm the quad with the USB plugged in but you can see the warning on the Arming tile.
Good luck
Yeah it’s pretty close but I don’t really understand much of what you described there, I’m totally new, jumped in at the deep end!
So here’s what I got to do far:
Built the quad (it doesn’t blow up when I connect a battery!)
I’ve updated the firmware in both the transmitter and the FC receiver.
Beta flight sees the drone and when I tilt it etc it mirrors the movement on screen.
I think I set a channel up but I’m not convinced, I followed a YouTube video of it a couple of weeks back.
The receiver usually has a soldering green light on when the usb isn’t connected but when it’s powered by the lipo.
Not sure if that helps to understand where I’m struggling but any help would be great I’d love to see this thing fly without it just being thrown out the window
No problem - patience is the name of the game - In Betaflight - go to the Modes tab - did you set anything in there already?
This is where you map your radio switches to some functionalities - including Arming the quad so that it is powered up to fly
You need to setup a switch from your radio to ‘arm’ your quad.
An extra step you likely need to take first is to map the switches on your radio to a channel as by default I believe only the 2 joystick are mapped to channels 1 to 4
Go to the receiver tab in Betaflight - confirm that the radio and receiver are bound by moving the joysticks of the radio and check those are reflected in the slider position for channels 1 to 4.
Then try to move any other switch of your radio and check if you see any mvt on any slider.
If no mvt - you need first to map the switches on your radio.
Note the Arm switch can only be one the 2-positions switches (top left, left shoulder or top right)
To map a switch on the Boxer - go to the Model page (press the Model button) and use the page button to get to the Mixes page.(page 5 of 11)
Scroll to Channel 5 on the page, then enter by pressing the scrollwheel - scroll to action - then enter to edit and move the switch you want to map - press enter again and it should now be saved.
Switch the quad back on - and you should now be able to map this new switch in the Betaflight modes tab (click on the ARM tile ‘Range’ button and move the switch to mapped to channel 5)
So I switch everything on and when I move the joysticks on the radio I don’t see anything moving in beta flight on the receiver tab.
When I click MDL button on the boxer I have channels 1-5 (I added 5) and named it. When I click the scroll wheel I only have options to backup, copy or move model?
Pretty stuck with it, looking at beta flight pages in the top left it says arming disabled.
I clicked add range button on the Modes tab and it added a bar in the row but not sure it means anything.
Do you think I’ve missed a few steps before all of this?
Thanks for your help so far too
np - looks like the binding has not been successful but we’ll come back to that later
First lets setup the Boxer - On the model page (top right of the screen shows 1/11) - it seems you can see 5 Models in there (not channels) - make sure you have selected the model you want to use (using the select option in the menu) - the current selected model will show with a star.
Then use the PAGE buttons to go to page 5 of 11 - the ‘Mixes’ page - where you can see the channel mapping.
This is where you need to map at least the 2 joysticks (channels 1 to 4) and a 2-position switch of your radio (channel 5). If you do not have channels 1 to 4 already in there I suggest you create another model using the ‘copy model’ function back on page 1 (using the FPV default one as a source of the copy).
Interface is not the easiest tbh but the instructions below should help you
Once this is done - you are ready to bind the radio to the drone
Hey, okay so I’ve followed that, I looks like I had 9 channels mapped. Ch5 seems to have two (100 SA) thenCH9 also has a (100SA)
This was already done, I think I may have mapped these following a YouTube video few weeks back.
One thing I noticed looking back at your snapshots - your ELRS receiver is soldered to the RX6 and TX6 pads (UART 6)
If this is still the case, then in Betaflight Ports tab, the ‘Serial RX’ should be set against UART6 (screenshot shows it is set against UART 2)
Also - are you connecting anything to those other enabled UART (1 & 4)?
just had a look on my Boxer - the += line means you added another action to the Channel 5 mix - not sure what it means to add the same switch twice tbh but best to remove it. Go to the line and press on the scroll wheel until the menu appears which allows you to delete the entry.
There’s nothing else currently attached to the other ports. I’ve clicked UART6 in the image now but unsure of what to do next?
On the uart 6 - set the serial and uncheck all the other ones on the left bar the first one - do not untick the first one or you will no longer be able to connect with the usb!
Okay great, so now when I go into receiver when I move the sticks the bars move, also the same when I flick the switches (I set SA to arm) but how do I turn the thing on? Can’t seem to get these motors firing? Apologies for all of this, it’s a steep learning curve to say the least.
Just seen this
In the modes tab, the top tile is for arming. Click on add range and then move the switch on your radio and it should pick it up.
Yes al switches are seen, I set three of them, one to arm, one to flip over if I crash, and one to help stabilise in the air. The latter two go yellow when I flick then down. The arm switch on aux 1 goes red and say ARM (disabled)
