Recovering drone from a tall tree

Shows you how to do it with the RC here:

Thanks, that is where the latest confusion came. I have no idea why but the controller logged out when syncing, I then logged back in and it looked like the DJI name that it creates (above the more) looked changed. Whilst I could not tell you what if was, I can see it is different as it reminded me of someone with initials. So unless in my wisdom… ahem… ok not so much wisdom when I first got a drone, did I create a different profile and by accident I have gone by memory and put the wrong one in… who knows…

So let’s assume I have two accounts without realising. ( I mean do to a club I joined they ended up getting me two operatory ID’s despite them asking if I was registered and I said yes, I digress).

Let’s assume that I remember what the log in is…(if I have more then one) would these come back to the controller.???

I think the best thing to do is fire up the RC controller. Turn wifi on and login to your known DJI account. See if that updates your flight logs and syncs them to DJI

On the subject of recovering from a tree, I’ve splashed out on a DroneSaver. Quite expensive to get to the UK, $85 for delivery, but I still decided I wanted one. Supposed to be 26" or over 8 meters. I’m getting the magnetic tip with it just in case. Not delivered yet.

The idea is primarily to be able to fetch classic FPV drones from trees should I get them there. I already have experience of borrowing a tall ladder from a local tradesperson to fetch a Mavic 2 Zoom from a rather low tree. Tree surgeons are a very good idea should the drone end up higher than drone saver can reach.

Price: USD 115.99!! :open_mouth:

Plus USD 85 for delivery? :open_mouth:

Can get a petrol chainsaw from Screwfix for a lot less. … and quicker!

:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Then stand underneath falling tree and catch drone.

That’s what friends are for. You stand well clear with a fishing net for the catch. :+1:

I will send the guy a message tonight and see if he will let me go the other way tomorrow. He may say yes just to get rid of me. He has been pretty good from the start. Hopefully will be in the next few days. Gotta get a stabby stick so I can make sure the ground is safe but to be totally honest, if the tree is still standing then the ground should be ok.

If it’s 100% up that tree, which I believe it is, if he cops the hump or obstructs you from trying to retrieve it, what is the law on that, is that classed as theft as such, even tho it’s in on his or there boundary / premises.

In all honesty he has been great about it. He even said that him and his staff would see if they could get it down without having to pay a tree guy. So at the moment I do not think he will obstruct me. He is just making sure that it is safe to get. I have just sent him an e-mail with a risk assessment saying that I would like to proceed to get it and if his is not happy with that, when will he be able to accompany me. I personally do not think it is a problem, so all being well I should get an answer back. He even responds in the evening which most people would not so we will see shortly

Good luck russ, I hope it all goes well mate :+1:t2:

Thanks

Ok so I have downloaded the airdata. I just needed time to work it out. The landing altitude is 70 ft however that is from the controller and the tree is on a higher level. so my idea is to send another drone up to 70ft in front of where it is and that will tell me if it is near ground level. Thanks for the help and thanks for Chris for the example. The land owner has asked that we try to see it from the road, I am going down there to see if we can. I have ordered some chimney sweep poles so I can screw them togheter should we see it ok. So we should be going over in the next couple of days I hope.

As it looks like the airdata stores the flights up to 100. Is there a way of downloading them and keeping them?

Now that you can view the flight in Airdata, you can work out how high up the tree the drone is.

You will need Google Earth Pro installed.

  1. Click on the KML, it should open in Google Earth Pro. If it doesn’t open Google Earth Pro first, then drag the downloaded KML into it.
  2. You can then zoom into the location to see the 3D flight path.
  3. Make sure you have Terrain ticked.

  1. Then select “Airdata”, right click, and select “Show Elevation Profile”

You can download your flight logs but they are unreadable. I paid £43 for an annual Gold subscription which allows me to keep 1200 flight logs, instead of the free 100.

Don’t forget to use the Grey Arrows 20% discount code if you do upgrade.

Hi, so I am that far now and have everything apart from the 3d part. I can see the flight path and I can also see the height but not the 3d.

Too all the people shouting at the screen. Sorry, I just had to be comfortable with doing this. Now I have done it… I am with you.

Right so, now I can not go a lot further without being there. I was at a lower level then the base of the tree.

So it shows 57m right at the start. As it passes over the higher dirt track it is up to 63 M and the place of rest is 79, however the ground below it is a lot higher then the road so I am still led to believe it is either on the floor of very low to the ground. I have purchased some chimney sweep poles off the net so I can carry them in the car and screw them together.

The only thing that I can not define is the base of the tree. This will need to be when I am there. The land owner is wanting me to see it from the road and not yet happy about going on there. The reason is as it is a quarry and this is on the road height he said the quarry could be loose. However, the fence is is a 3 bar fence about waist high so health and safety must have allowed the fence to be ok. Also the tree it is in is high and if the ground weak and could not stand my weight then the tree would not still be upright. Unless he is saying that I am heavier then a tree and then I will need words lol. In all honesty I think it is a hop over the fence, either grab drone or poke it with a stick. I was going to take some string with me and tape a litter grabber to the end of the pole and tie the string to the handle if it is in a place that could drop over the clff but I honestly believe that it is in a safe location but as there is a mass of trees I can not see the ground to work that out till I am there. I did quite a longish e-mail to him explaining that I am not going to be hanging off the edge of a cliff. Even without the air data the information I had from the controller was good to make me confident of a grab. On the day of the crash I should have gone straight over the fence while the thing was in find me mode, was just about to pop over the fence and I heard a car coming round the corner so I stepped back and looked like I was just looking, just my luck it was the guy who had just locked the gates. So I said I was just looking. He drove off and a few minutes later I drove to see if he had gone to find him parked up the road so he knew that I was considering it.

If I was to look logically, they have not “actually” told me I can not go over. They have said "I’m afraid the risk of searching through the trees and brittle quarry rock is just to great and therefore cannot allow you to continue this search as planned. "… I mean technically if you know where it is, is it classed as a search. I wonder if he is just covering his back thinking… Well I told him. I mean if you went into a farmers field the gate is higher so getting in is simple. There is one house on the same road and the rest is just fields…

So on top of the air data, I have the memory of where it was bleeping from which is right where I thought it was before even looking at the control or the airdata, this is totally from looking from the other side from a lower ground level. I drove round to the public road and guessed from what I thought and literally found where to enter. I could hear it and it sounded close. I also have a picture of me on the camera as I was able to move the gimble up and down so I know that it is actually upright so it is probably between branches but would guess it is not on the floor as there are probably leaves and as I was lower the image would be blocked with nature rubbish. However the noise was not high even though it is not the best noise to guage height. In the picture of me I can see a building behind me and a rock sicking out on another piece so I could easily work it out with that too.
Then I got all… oooo airdata… errm well errm… whist still downloading but unsure.

We have the air data and I would go today but there are not chimney sweep poles here. If I was to see it from the road then they would help. But if I have to go in and see it then I could not ask them for assistance as I went against their wishes. I have requested to go down and show him the air data (but I will go to the road first to see what I can see from there. If I see it and it is how I think it is. I will just grab it and be done with it. I am just not the fittest and with plantar fasciitis problem with my heel I just have to be careful.

To pan from 2D facing down to 3D, just hold the centre mouse wheel down and move the mouse around.

Personally, I would have waited for the gate keeper to drive off, then go back, jump over the fence and rescue the drone. But hindsight is just that.

Hope it works out. Let us know how you get on.

That was my idea but he was waiting round the corner and I think he was giving it a few minutes and then going to return. The ground has brambles on so I could not have ran over it. At the same time, yes i should have taken the chance. I could have been lucky. (No mouse on this laptop, glide pad so will work out which one. I have zoomed in)

Right looking at the 3d view, that will not help me as the highest point is a road on site and the other road is higher. So on the 3d image it looks very high like it was at the top of a tree but that is not the case. The noise was also in front of me from the road and not abive. And the fact we could see it from the other side. I could put the pictures together but I think I am doing too much when I am already convinced it will work.
