RTF Competition December 26th to January 8th - Monochrome Landscapes - WINNERS announced

It’s not…, which is why I think @MartG1960 was referring to a gentlemens agreement

I too favour 1 picture entry. However as others have said you should be allowed to post up a few then choose your entry. Otherwise nobody will submit an entry at the beginning of the competition and will instead wait untill the last day in the knowledge they will submit their best entry.

This is the first time entering the RTF competition.
I’m happy to go with what ever the majority decides. I only posted more than one photo because I thought it said we could … and also the weather for this particular competition was crap and as soon as there was chance of clearer skies I took the opportunity to go fly.
It’s only a bit of fun after all.
Keep smiling people!

I’m for adding it to the rules, that and one image per entrant. It would make it easier to see the actual entries in the thread. It can be heard going scrolling back through all the images and you may miss some.

Good point too. We could set a limit, say maximum of three entries per person?

It’s a difficult choice , within a two week period some flyers @clinkadink for example have managed to fly in a few different locations :+1: and as he discovered took what he believes is a better image than his first earlier entry, I personally don’t see any problem in uploading as many photos you consider as possible entries, it gives members less able to get out and fly something to view and ideas for others, I have mentioned it before but the individual member could nominate their best entry forward to the vote
( not too late though for the benefit of the @Challenges_Committee )

You can have multiple entries, quite clear in the first post as long as they’re one per post. I personally prefer to post one, it’s not often the competition theme and/or weather give me the opportunity for more than one flight. If it did, I’d hold the photos back to the last day.

We are quite happy whether you have one or a dozen entries as long as each is in a separate post.

In an ideal world we would like a clear indication of which posts are for the competition and which are for display - by post number please rather than “the one I posted last Tuesday …”

To create a poll each still image has to be resized and filetype changed to *.webp to make a nice, tight quick loading file. Any videos have a five second gif created from a portion of the original.

All the files are entered into the poll by uploading each image, creating the poll header (votes=multiple, hidden till closed; poll closes=date, time, poll type-bar … etc) then using the newly generated id for the image add each one to the poll. Then it is a simple but fiddly task to link each poll image back to the original and check that the link is valid and points to the correct picture.

The code looks something like this:

which can be a bit of a sod to debug - especially when hidden spaces and similar cause the whole thing to crash.

Hence the duty programmer isn’t bothered about the number or quality of the entries but would just like the entries to be there by dusk on a Saturday night, giving them time to arrange them in some coherent semblance of a poll and being able to correct any glitches in the code without late entries or amendments necessitating a rejig of code block. It can be done but tends to annoy the dp, especially if he or she is by then outside of several cans of weapons grade lager type beverage and trying to understand the action and dialogue in a poorly lit, filmed and dubbed Eastern European “art” film.

So keep the pictres coming bt please - not all of them late on Saturday night!

Surely all photos in a competition thread are entries? Deduct 2 points per non-competition photo :joy:

Maybe just make that the deadline?!

Wouldn’t work in summer

And there would be all kinds of arguments as to when dusk actually occurs …

Say 6pm on the last day of the competition ?

Sorry for the late result for this competition. The entire RTF department has been suffering from a flu / cold/ Covid-like ailment and were unavailable for duty last night having been dosed with Tixylix and sent to an early bed with a soothing cup of warm malted milk,

So belated congratulations to our first place winner @Acedrone for his ridge and furrow landscape which suits monochrome as much as it does colour - as seen in an earlier contest.

In second place came @CSB73 with a great picture of Walltown Crags on the route of Hadrian’s Wall.

Third was @clinkadink who decided, very late in the day, to enter just one image, that of Knap Hill fortifications on Salisbury Plain.

And belated congratulations to everyone who braved the weather and made the effort to get out and fly. The result was a great crop of pictures and a well-supported competition.

Interesting that the three top pictures were each of a historic landscape and the pictures were each the sole entry of the competitor.

Grape shot or solid ball?

Many thanks to all who entered and for voting in the competition. Given the calibre of the entries it is truly an honour to have finished in the top 3. Well done to both @Acedrone and @clinkadink with some cracking shots. Another fantastic RTF comp and long may it continue. Finally, I should also thank @Sandbagger for the idea to enter one of my photos in the comp in the first place. Cheers everyone :+1:
