The Tri-Sail – “Sails of the South”
This dramatic, 43-metre high structure is located in the central reservation at the northern end of the M275. Its position marks the junction with the M27 and the beginning of the journey onto Portsea Island.
The design concept echoes the three directions of the motorway intersection, whilst also symbolising the three different maritime activities, which have and continue to share Portsmouth Harbour; Naval, Commercial and Recreational.
Careful lighting has ensured that this structure remains as dramatic at night as it does during the day, without affecting highway safety or navigation in the Harbour.
“The Sails of the South” required planning permission, which was granted in December 1999 by the City Council Planning Committee.
Despite unseasonably high winds and persistent rain, the Sails of the South, was largely erected on site during November/December 2000, with the lighting switched on in March 2001.
