Solar Eclipse 2026 Friendly Competition - Scores Revealed

Just had a thought, so there’s been no planning gone into this but seeings there’s been a bit of chat & interest regarding the solar eclipse today, why not & open to all members on here whether your using a camera drone or doing a video by drone or any handheld device photo or video then stick one on here ( per member ) then when everyone’s finished we’ll set up a poll for best shot by drone ( photo ) best video by drone, by phone or other handheld camera device etc etc ? ( obviously also ) only if we get enough entries ?
Then set up the poll & categorise each device for a winner / winners on each to be voted ?

No prizes all for fun ! :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit : yes sorry about the short notice :upside_down_face:

Is there any best practice about photo’s given I’ve read sun can damage the CMOS sensor. Unsure whether to be concerned but I have a few ND and UV filters. Not sure what’s best/safe.

@ianinlondon is your man. Has done it before with good results. Seems as though an ND64 is your go to once the moon starts eating the sun.

My solar filter - solar filter sheet glued to a 58mm UV camera filter :slight_smile:

Worked well for the last eclipse we had :slight_smile:

Think I will give this a go. I only have the standard ND filters that came with the drone, so the ND128 it is for me.

@WoolySheep

An ND1000 only cuts light by 10 stops (OD 3.0), which is 100 times too bright for direct imaging of the sun. You need roughly 16 to 18 stops of reduction. You’re risking your sensor!!

Not a good shot, but we couldn’t see much. I think it is because we are in the Midlands, and we all know that the Midlands gets things after everybody else, and probably is a less quality version (thanks No. 10!)

Tracking the whole thing with my telescope, these are just the screenshots, so far I have been filming 1 hour 40 mins :blush:

The video is as bad as I expected. Poor bandwidth, poor footage, and lost signal before the eclipse was complete.

I hope I’m at least eligible for a live stream badge :joy:

Wow, did it last long? I bet you had more fun with yours that I did the real thing!

I do feel a bit sickly now tho :flushed_face:

Tried a hyperlapse with the drone, but without any ND filters - no chance. Its a glare-out. Won’t win any competition with this one’
