Some surprises with Mini 4K.. so far

With the older Mini 2 I used to do the pre-flight orientation routine… spin and turn… I’m not prompted to do this with the 4K model… it worked ok after getting enough satellites…

Ips I found a manual for the Mini 4K… I didn’t know the orientation of the controller’s ariel’s meant much till I read this! i’ll have to spend some more time browsing it… LOL

Never had it once on mine, bought on day of release !

Thanks for replying…

I am on Android if it makes any difference… The App always took me to the spin the drone full circle and then rotate the body… every time.

The compass dance

There was a firmware update that fixed it

Couldn’t think of the description. LOL

My Mavic Mini (Mini 1?) needs frequent compass calibratiion, though that may be to do with taking off from metal benches…

This drone is noticeably more sensitive to badly-pointed antennae than the 2SE murdered by gulls, or the 2 in the short time before I treed it (actually, not the tree that did the damage, but the fall from it to the hard pathway below). There’s a significant change in technology between the ‘1’ and the 2, from the wifi RC-drone connection of the ‘1’ to the ‘Occusync’ of the 2 and later Mavic Minis. I don’t know what Occysync is but it works much better than wifi, which goes wobbly even if you look at it funny; Occusync seems more robust and longer range.

You’ve still got to point the antennae moreorless towards the aircraft, though!!!

It doesn’t need calibrating, the bench is interfering with it! move away and it will be fine

Yeah, that point sort of sunk through the thick skull eventually… Like I said, the drone is more intelligent than me, so I do what it tells me to do.

Flying the Mavic Mini ‘1’ has been good for me, instilling a better understanding and healthy mistrust of aeriels and signal/ connectivity issues that I perhaps took for granted with the 2SE.

Till you crashed that too

more from the manual…

I have often left these on… DUH!

I think i remeber something about putting the phone in airplane mode?

I used to put it in airplane mode once id booted the fly app so my map was there, also to stop calls whilst i was flying

Good idea!

I’ll try and remember… bit more difficult once I got past 21.

Not true. Seagulls ate it. I crashed the Mini 2 (see what I mean about DJI confusing names, it’s as if they keep re-inventing the same drone over and over but slightly different. Mavic Mini mk1, mk2, &c would be better).

I’ve been thinking about Amazon’s Black Friday offer on the 4K, and the more I think the more likely I am to succumb, in which case I’ll get the Mini 2 repaired eventually and sell the Mavic Mini. That’ll leave me with two 4K zoom Occusync drones with 3 batteries that can be used in either, possibly sell the Mini 2 on drone-only.

The Johnster’s drone history to date; drone 1, cheapo off Amazon, complete crap, flyaway, drone 2, ‘P8’ type off Amazon, difficult to contral, poor camera, gave away to neighbour when I got drone 3, Mini 2SE, killed by gulls, drone 4, insurance payout Mavic Mini, needed new RC, not a good buy but I got it working properly eventually, drone 5, Mini 2 bought from a member here, v, generous offer & I’m grateful, which is why I’m reluctant to sell it on, flew sideways into tree and damaged falling out of tree.

Probable putative drone 6, Mini 4K off Amazon. The low Amazon price is a double-edged sword; I can afford it (just, the children will starve, but only for a week or so), but it wll be tough to sell the Mavic Mini for much, given that the 4K is quantum better. They’re going on the Bay at around £200 for flymore combos, but I reckon I’d have to ask for a lot less than that to have much chance of sellling! The RC from the 2SE can be sold as well, which should just about cover a new 4K…

See, now, what I’ve just done is argued myself into a 4K. It’ll be here early next week.

That would be 6 drones in just over 8 months, one flyaway and not missed, one given away, one lost at sea to bird attack, one damaged falling out of tree. No a particularly good record, is it? Seriously, Johnster, stop it after the 4K, you’re in a hole, stop digging…

Crop.

Suspected!

I use an old iPhone 11 as my flying phone, no SIM and in Aircraft Mode.

Yes, all right, crop, or ‘digital zoom’, the lens doesn’t move. Proper zoom would be much too heavy to think about on a sub-250g drone presumably. I’m aware of the distinction, but most people will understand what I mean by ‘zoom’ in this context. Blame DJI (specifically marketing, probably), it’s their description…

you cracked me up with the kids going hungry!

I’ll probably get a visit from the police for posting this comment as incitement to harm.

If I hadn’t already ordered a lanyard combo I’d have gone for this as it is small and less likely to foul the phone buttons.
