Stonyhurst College, Lancashire

This was taken back in 2017 when I took my family to visit my old school. Building is one of the biggest in Europe and there are still large parts I have not visited after spending many years there.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was an alumni and apparently description of Baskerville Hall in the “Hound of the Baskervilles” echoed parts of the College, especially the Twin Towers of the Front.

Also, J R R Tolkien was a regular guest at the College when his son John took refuge there during the WW2. He spent much of his time working on The Lord of the Rings in a classroom in the upper gallery. He was a nature lover and did long walks in the countryside around the college. A number of names mentioned in the books are similar to those found locally.

Just a bit of history of the place.

Ahhh, our arch enemies / nemesis / sister school

I went to Mount St Mary’s (Mount St Mary's College - Added to Historic Buildings in East Midlands) and Barlborough Hall prep (Barlborough Hall - Added to Historic Buildings in East Midlands).

One of my old teachers went on to become a deputy head at Stoneyhurst - John Hopkins if you were around in his tenure. Almost certainly retired now but was at MSM until the 1990’s. Nice to see the old building(s) from a different perspective.

Good to hear from an adversary. 1990 is a bit after my time. I firmly belong to the Geezer/ Dinosaur age.

I’m guessing at the date as I had long left school by then as well - just I know he moved from MSM to Stoney. I left in 1980, or rather was refused a return after my O Levels
