Tablets .. OS, size, performance and reliability

Yup - as I pass a large patch of something soft, rather than all the rocks I’ve been trekking over - I stand in the middle and set to my position.

Never used in anger - but have tested to check I wasn’t living in the land of false security.
I’ve also used the only time I’ve flown from a boat, too.

@PingSpike, I do sometimes, mate. I also intend to do a bit more within the kitcar club that I’m part of :slightly_smiling_face:

@callum, this is one of my concerns, that due to the very nature of Android OS, some devices might be less stable, even between models.

If you are more comfortable with an Android, go with it but check what works best with DJI.
Apple iOS dose a great job

It’s not as bad as it used to be. Picking a device was a lottery in the early days even with flagship models.

IOS was always recommended for that reason with iPad mini 4 being go to for a lot of people as it just worked.

Dont think you will have that same issue on newer android devices with them getting more powerful and app being more refined.

I’m not a fan of apple stuff but the refurbed iPad mini 4 I picked up 2 year ago has been great.

Yup, that’s the issue with Android even between model versions. There’s quite a bit too consider!

Thanks @callum, and I think you could be right. Then there’s also those “unbranded” Android devices that appear to pack a lot of features but aren’t widely tested/used.

Hi ALL, thanks very much for all your input and comments, much appreciated! :+1:

I don’t know if I’m any further forward but that’s nothing to do with the great feedback from everyone! On saying that, I think an iPad is out (Mini 4 wifi + cellular are still too pricey and some not in a good condition :open_mouth:).

So, maybe it is an 8" android for me then … ah, but which one! :unamused::laughing:

@AboveAndBeyondMedia, that’s not a bad idea Stuart. I’ve looked st some secondhand Minis 3/4 but so far, they all look like they’ve been knocked about a bit!

Not being an Apple user, I’m not really up on them but fo you have any concerns about its performance moving forward ie Apple fw updates vs Go4 fw updates, and your iPad’s ability to cope?

@northernlights53, following your lead on the Huawei tablet, Bernie, I’m now looking at the MediaPad M5 Lite 8. Decent spec and only £169.99 on Amazon!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Huawei-MediaPad-Lite-Octa-Core-Processor/dp/B07T9M2LGK/ref=sr_1_3?crid=BA3DJGM1RXVC&keywords=huawei+mediapad+m5+lite+8.0&qid=1572084844&sprefix=Huawei+mediapad+m5+lite+8%2Caps%2C174&sr=8-3

Nope, it’s working just fine with the latest version.

@bombero I’m interested in any feedback on what you do get in the end; I’m considering switching from my phone to a tablet but not looking to spend more than £100.

I started with IPad mini 4 probs with memory as only 16gb so sold it and got IPad mini 4 (5th generation 64gb cellular for less than what I sold my other one, now do not have problems with position ie red arrow as before and memory is just about big enough but did really want 128 gb but off load footage once home onto PC Matt screen cover is excellent in bright sun never needed sunshade as yet, serves me well and IOS apps for converting footage are easy.
It’s my choice everyone to there own but would not shell out for smart controller

Okay, so I took the plunge and bought a new Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite 8.0 to day from my local Argos for 179.99 … I couldn’t ordered from Amazon and got it tomorrow but it’s been a no-fly kinda day here so put myself to good use by buying/setting up my M5 today. That’s my excuse anyway :smirk::grin:

Uploaded and set up DJI Go 4, UAV Forecast and Yr (great weather app, by the way!) apps with no issues but haven’t tested Go 4 yet. Tablet going through major (>3GB) firmware update at the mo. Weather looks promising tomorrow so should get out even if for some test flights!

@kvetner, wee update for you on the MediaPad M5 Lite 8.0

Big firmware update went well and no issues. Screen is very clear, bright and punchy colours! Liking it so far.

Weather turned on me today before I could get out :disappointed: so no-fly again! Sat indoors and connected up to the Go4 app with no issues so another promising sign.

So far, I’m loving this tablet. IMHO, it’s the perfect size and weight (8" screen, c.310g). My Tab S4 weighs c.485g and I can feel the difference. I’m very optimistic!

I also use a Huawei MediaPad T3
Bought second hand from CEX the exchange shop £45 and comes with a 2 year guarantee.
8" screen so big enough to see but not too heavy to be uncomfortable.
Everything seems to work just fine and updates with Go4 and Dji

Same here, thinking about getting small tablet instead of phone. Going to start commercially next year and think a bigger screen is necessary for this

The only issue I have with tbe ipad is using it in bright sunshine as screen isnt bright enough.

I do have a crystal sky too and favour that during bright conditions, other than that I find the ipad mini 3 fine, though I dont use it for anything else. Bought it off ebay used with a 12 month warranty

I’ve been using my iPad Air and my Samsung S7. Both have their pro’s and cons. The S7 screen is getting a little small for my ageing eyesight and the iPad doesn’t have GPS and a roaming data connection. I very nearly took a trip to Curry’s at the weekend after reading people’s thoughts in this thread on the Mediapad T3. Unfortunately the T3 runs Android 6 and I need a minimum of a Android 7 to be able to run the latest version of FreeFlight 6 for the Parrot Anafi. Also the iPad doesn’t play well with APM and Pixhawk flight controllers.

Today I came across the Teclast P80X. It’s running Android 9, has GPS and AGPS, dualband WiFi and 4G, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. I’ve owned the Teclast TBook 11, Android and Windows10 tablet, for about three years and I’ve been very pleased with it so today I ordered the P80X solely for drone use. I’ve ordered from Amazon just for the next day delivery and no quibble return option but it is available from eBay and the usual Chinese box droppers for significantly less than Amazon’s £89.

Well I’ve had a few days to play with the Teclast P80X and I’ve decided to send it back. I don’t want my post above to be construed as a recommendation.

It does indeed have a very good GPS receiver built in, GPS/GLONASS, which actually out performs my Samsung S7, but this is outweighed by some serious issues.

  1. It appears I’m not the first owner as when I booted it up there was somebody else’s Google details already in it. First Parrot and now this?!? I immediately performed a factory reset on it.

  2. It keeps randomly switching itself off.

  3. It was advertised as having 802.11ac, a major factor for my purchase, but this is not true. I tried it with every region standard and nothing. Diagnostic testing confirmed there was no 5GHz hardware installed.

  4. No UVC support. In a few of the Pixhawk/APM applications on Android there is the facility to overlay real-time video via UVC/EZCAP but even though the tablet recognised my UVC device there was no video to be seen. I tried it with many different APP’s with the same negative results. I know there have been some issues with Android Pie and UVC devices but I think in this case it’s because the USB port cannot drive the UVC hardware.

So in conclusion even though Droneshop.biz sell this tablet to be used in conjunction with the Skydroid T10 long range system (10km video and 20km control link) I would not recommend this for use with the newer dualband WiFi based drones that are currently available.
