The Great Big GADC 5th Birthday and Treasure Hunt Challenge!

Sorry Barry but that is not a military vehicle.

The vessel you saw flash past is HMC (Her Majesty’s Cutter) Valiant. She is a Border Force, formerly UK Border Agency, cutter. one of four 42-metre (138 ft) cutters formerly operated by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and since 2008 operated by the UK Border Agency until its dissolution in 2013

Photo by Adambro and used under the terms of CC 2.0

It is currently operated by the UK Border Force who form a law-enforcement command within the Home Office. The personnel are classed as Civil Servants.

The name HMS Valiant - His / Her Majesty’s Ship - has been held by a number of vessels since 1755. The last was a nuclear powered submarine (S102) which was paid off in 1994. The name will be used for the second boat of the Dreadnought submarine class, expected to enter service in the early 2030’s

We assume that you were flying your drone from the chain ferry as it crossed the harbour mouth between Shell Bay and Sandbanks. Did you have to ask a crew member if it was ok to do so?

Ah well, had to try lol
As for photo, I took it with my phone ( sure I read somewhere in rules that some photos don’t have to be by Drone?)
Was going from Poole to Studland and suddenly saw HMS V so jumped out of car, hence shaky photo lol.
Better luck next time. Be posting more later from my day out, get rule books ready for 1 of them

We suggest you re-read section 2 of the rules - Entries.

The Grey Arrows Mobile Phone Photo Club Birthday Challenge and Treasure Hunt has yet to be organised.

LOL. I knew I saw some mention of phones in rules, just couldn’t remember what it said ? Luckily I took rest of shots today with Mavic Air2 or I’d be very unhappy
Maybe that’s a comp for winter months

Item number : 3 A person or persons windsurfing

unfortunately I cant claim any extras, it was all i could do to get 4 w/surfers in 1 Shot, now if you had asked for paddle boarders or kite surfers, no problem. I spent 3 hours waiting for more windsurfers lol

Well done.

I did consider Stonehenge but was sure that someone would have flown it before and marked it.

But also ruled it out because of the lack of a gate guardian.

Not an easy site to fly from as NT land. And so can’t fly from their car park or site itself.

I believe that you can fly from the sheep droves however. That is maybe where you flew from?

Where did you end up to take the photo?

Hiya, I found a turning off A303 that went up towards Stonehenge where there were about 6 caravans? Looked like some sort of meet, maybe English Heritage people, so I was able to park off main road and TOAL from top of car without hassle Only quick flight as we were on way to Poole for photos of windsurfers ( who knew it’s not as popular now, only managed 4 in 1 photo shot😡)
Who picked these comp subjects lol

Hi. Sorry about that waffle, I’m replying to 3 others and I mixed up the answers lol
I spent hours in Poole by Sandbanks area looking for bloody windsurfers. Lots kite surfers, tons of paddle boarders and now quite a few wing boarders? Suppose wing is easier than having a long pole to carry around but means not lot people out windsurfing when I needed them

I have a picnic chair , flask of tea and sandwiches in car to go and sit on bridge overlooking a dual carriageway for that item on challenge list ?
If you hear of old guy collapsing later today in Bristol, that could be me.
White car, red bus, green lorry. Wrong
Grey car, blue lorry, red tractor. Wrong
Omg. I can’t remember what I’m looking for

1 point added. Paddleboarders were also a plague last year for those searching for canoeists, so it’s not a new phenomenon…

Thx. Has anyone made decision on my Item 4 entry yet??

No. Unfortunately we aren’t at the keyboard 24/7 so discussions between judges over contentious points tend to take as long as they take.

Messges have been cluttering up the airwaves though - 22 of you have managed nearly 1000 posts. The judges are rather less numerous yet have achieved 1982 messages in their own private discussion …

Barry,

Thank you for your entry. However after no small amount of deliberation the committee have decided that we are unable to accept this submission as a military site.

The reason for this is that the airfield that was at the site was situated to the west of Stonehenge, as shown by the below image:

image

The image you have submitted appears to show the landscape to the north east of the circle. This can be seen by the position of the stones indicated in the below images:

Therefore the actual site of the airfield would appear to be somewhere to the left of the field of view of the photo you submitted.

As the entire entry has been disallowed, you are of course welcome to resubmit another image for consideration.

Burntisland Fairground

  1. A Funfair - this must be presented as a video of less than 30 seconds :white_check_mark:
A Ferris/big wheel in motion :x: I should have checked before I went
Shot at night :x: I’m not brave enough to be in Fife on my own, at night, carrying expensive kit
Hyperlapse - time compression of at least 5 to 1 :white_check_mark: (I think)
