Wow, I think the controversy this could cause blows my 6 wheeled train into significance! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I do admire the timing of submitting this one though, very clever :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::clap:.

Certainly. This diagram below shows flying height, Page 11 drawn down from today’s Drone and Model Aircraft Code https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/the_drone_code.pdf

It’s dated June 2023 and to the best of my knowledge is the same as on the day of my flight.

My reading of this is, the diagram backs up the text before it. The cliff text is clear and unambiguous and is not backed by a diagram below it.

There are many text rules through the Drone Code that are not illustrated. The cliff paragraph is one of them. Page 12 has a diagram illustrating not flying close to people but doesn’t have a diagram for the following paragraph that mitigates for people involved in what you’re doing. This is similar to the way things are written on Page 11. Rule in text, diagram illustrating that, and then mitigating circumstances in text.

Page 12. The point 4 continuation on the next page that’s alluded to does not include a diagram.

Page 13 describes the weight in words with no chart, diagram, nor illustration of scales. There’s not always a picture.

Andrew, as part of your justification of your image you used https://register-drones.caa.co.uk/drone-code/the_drone_code.pdf as a reference.

Your drone or model aircraft must never be more than 120m
(400ft) from the closest point of the earth’s surface.
If you fly where the ground falls or rises, such as over hills,
mountains or cliffs, you may need to adjust your flight path
so that your drone or model aircraft is never more than 120m
(400ft) from the closest point of the earth’s surface.

We will also use that publication as a reference. The diagram that accompanies the above ruling is this:

So, using the reference work you chose, your flight is invalid and thus no points are scored. You are of course free to conduct another flight within the restrictions shown below in order to accomplish this particular element of the Challenge

The subject was discussed and the answer posted in the Challenge thread with an accompanying group-challenges tag to alert as many people as possible to the means of achieving this part of the Challenge.

Following further speculation by the community a second notice was posted that repeated the content of the first with an example of a suitable subject. This too was notified to all members of the Challenges notification group.

The most relevant sentence in that message read:

For the purposes of subject 23 of this competion we take the wording shown in the Drone code diagram, reproduced here:

So we consider that there had been adequate explanation of subject 23 and adequate notification for Challenge competitors of what was required of them

We hate to appear patronising but one of the rules you may have read at some point in the course of the Challenge states:

5. The stern stuff

  • It will save a lot of energy, time, irritation and possible unpleasantness if competitors expend their creativity searching for images to comply with the instructions rather than attempting to find loopholes to exploit

Better luck next time

Hi I’m claiming for a telehandler. After resigning myself to no more points in my ability/miniSE envelope I spotted this. I claim 3 points as its a telehandler, lts green and its lifting something up a tiny amount.

Dji mini SE, 8th Sept 3.30pm. Scalby School, Scarborough. Yes the building work is to replace the RAAC thats caused the site to be closed this week! Kids in on Monday.

  1. A Telehandler 25 - Video only

Bonus point if it’s neither red nor yellow.
Bonus point if it is in the process of lifting or lowering a load (provide a 10-second minimum video).

3 points, Hamish. It looks like the driver is new to the job and getting advice from his colleague - we could have unpacked and carried the blocks quicker!

I’m only claiming 1 point. I swear there was another tractor in the field but it was so far away as to be invisible!

Dji mini se, Wold Newton, East Riding, taken 23rd Aug 23.

  1. An Agricultural Tractor - in a field. Still or video

Its going take years to rebuild the school at this rate!

Just the one point for the one tractor, sorry :frowning:

11 An island in a lake, loch, lough.
Bonus point if there is a building on the island
May I present Loch Leven and Leven Castle upon it.

2 points claimed.

12, A railway track passing under a road bridge
Sadly only the one point claimed as the train is passing under the bridge, but the lorry is just past the confines of the bridge. Close but no cigar

2 points for Leven Castle. It’s a wee bit indistinct but either there is a small boat making its way toward the castle or Loch Leven has a creature to rival Nessie

Ahh yes, the Loch Leven monster. Wondered what was causing those ripples :joy::joy::joy:

We are minded to allow that the wagon is in fact within the confines of the bridge. The barrier is still higher than the normal road barrier, protecting high-sided vehicles in crosswinds. A bridge consists of both span and walls / supports - we don’t consider the vehicle has passed the end of the wall on its side of the road.

Four points in total. Is there a bonus for cab colour? Wait until Saturday night to find out!

No arguments, remember:

There are still 103 possible points for the top 7 people

That is a lot of points!
