Old & Young Ralphs
High atop the North York Moors at Rosedale Head stands a couple of curios
Old Ralphs Cross stands out of sight of the nearby road
It was probably carved in the 11th century, it was first recorded in a charter dating from around 1200
Local myths and legends say it was erected by a local farmer, named Ralph, in memory of a traveller who died at the location
It stands around about 6 feet tall, set in a socket hole in a roughly-shaped base
The letter “R”, standing for “Ralph”, was later carved into it, and in 1708 the date and initials “CD” for “Charles Duncan” were also carved
Young Ralphs Cross sits nearby, alongside the Castleton to Hutton-le-Hole road in Rosedale
It was probably also carved in the 11th century. The head of the cross was replaced, perhaps in the 18th century. The cross was broken in 1984 and again in 1990, and on both occasions was repaired with steel pins and cement
In 1974, it was adopted as the emblem of the North York Moors National Park
This cross stands at around 10 feet in height. It has a roughly-shaped base, and the lower part has much-weathered interlace ornament and a cable-moulded border
My favourite lens.

Another from my recent trip to Northern Ireland, The Dark Hedges. Probably not the best time to see them, the middle of summer, far too many tourists and too much greenery for me. So with the help of PS, no tourists and a bit of mono ![]()
