For once I am happy about DJI NFZ , call the number below
How did you get on with your request to ATC at Manchester Airport?
Was this you today

Trying to unlock a FRZ to fly in Willington for a few photos. DJI are asking for proof of permission when Derby Airfield only provide oral permission over the phone. Sort of stuck on this now ? I suppose I could ask Derby Airfield to email me the permission and upload this ? But seems to be putting DA to a bit of work for what would be literally a 5 minute flight no higher than 30m
Anyone able to help ?
I’ve flown there, with permission and only had to hit the ok prompt if I recall correctly? If your using the RC just use DJI Flysafe before you go; upload the resulting authorisation to your drone at home and you wont need wifi or a hotspot to your phone when you get there.
If you’ve not used Flysafe before visit this youtube site:Flysafe vid
Ps. The cooling towers are 90m tall so if you intend to fly over them dont forget to set your RTH height accordingly (I lost signal a few times behind them).
Thanks Doc.Col. I actually want to fly in the centre of Willington if that makes a difference ?
@JockyB Only if your within the Derby Airport FRZ. Visit Drone Scene for their boundary. I’m guessing you have already rung their ATC, very friendly and they’re not to fussed about Willington as they are over 120m by the time they are close by its closer to the Toyota plant that they get twitchy.
Trying on the fly safe site and this is as far as I can get. It’s still asking for permissions received? Can’t submit the request without the proof, so I can’t even request the unlock Looks like firing the drone up and throwing it in the air to take a photo
Just to add, I tried flying there a few months ago and got the warning on the RC screen that I was within a geofenced area and had to apply to have this unlocked. Drone of course would not take off. Looks like asking Derby Airfield if they will email me the permission soI can screenshot that and send that with the request.
And now everyone can see why I want to fly there of course
Maybe it sounds to them like a commercial activity I always start and finish with 'recreational flight only" and so far got instant unlock. If you need proof Derby Airport will send you an email as long as you send them details of you and your drone (I needed this for last years Birthday Competition subject).
Cheers, I’ll list it as recreational only ( but will GADC require proof of permission for the comp ? ( as opposed to proof of the unlock by DJI )
Edit, just tried again as recreational and still it wants me to upload permission from Derby Airfield
Weird that, I’d just ring up Derby ATC and explain you need proof. If you send them an email they will respond.
I’ll try and unlock it for myself when I get a mo as I said I’ve never had to do it yet for the Derby Airport. They gave me permanent authorisation to fly between 1600 and 0730hrs as they do not operate during this period (I still give em a courtesy call) and I’ve flown here loads.
Maybe type a document stating that the airport only give verbal permission, and give some times /dates / number called, take a screen shot and upload that.
They may just wave it through?
Hmmm , not sure Budgie. Thing is on the map DJI link to whilst doing the unlock request, the Derby Airfield FRZ doesn’t show. But if you try and fly there, it comes up as a warning on the screen saying you have to apply for an unlock request.
@JockyB Your abolutely right John, just tried it and Derby Airport FRZ isn’t showing. Tried custom Zone and it requires doc upload. Tried Blue area in East Midlands, which is supposed to be an area that automatically unlocks and it required upload of doc’s. Strange, as I’ve never had an issue at Willington or an unlock for that matter before
Ahh well Doc , it’s not only me then having this problem. I’m assuming everyone will now have to have the permissions in place before unlock is allowed. Mind you I wouldn’t want to unlock East Mids Airport. It’s run by Manchester Airport Group who I’m led to believe charge you for permission to fly in their FRZ. No pay, no play, which is a pity, my stepdaughter is getting married next month at a venue in Castle Donnington. Would have been nice to get a few videos from 20m in the air, but at least I can now concentrate on the bar.
Just report any ATC that charge for permission to the CAA. The CAA have and continue to stipulate airports should not charge for this.
Handy bit of info, I didn’t know they try to charge, I also did not know they should not if I’m reading right
Anyone know how long it takes DJI to respond to an unlocking request ? Just applied for my first one
No need to reply folks. My first unlock request has been successful. DJI responded within 1/4 hr
