Video recording time

Hi all
What are your recommendations on shooting times as in record say 5 minutes of footage in one take or short (seconds) of footage then edit in post?
Thanks in advance
Mel

Record everything, edit in post.

Film everything you can
However depends on how big you’re SD card is if it’s filling up to quickly try dropping to 1080hp

Shite to that, buy a bigger/more cards

Avata 2 as an example

Resolution/Codec 46GB **internal 128GB 256GB 512GB
4K (4:3) H.264 ~0.28 hours ~2.77 hours ~5.55 hours ~11.10 hours
4K (4:3) H.265 ~0.33 hours ~3.32 hours ~6.64 hours ~13.27 hours
4K (16:9) H.264 ~0.40 hours ~4.88 hours ~9.76 hours ~19.51 hours
4K (16:9) H.265 ~0.48 hours ~5.86 hours ~11.71 hours ~23.41 hours
JPEG 4000×3000 ~256 pictures ~3200 pictures ~6400 pictures ~12800 pictures
JPEG 4000×2256 ~341 pictures ~4270 pictures ~8540 pictures ~17080 pictures

*max bitrate = estimated minimum durations based on up to 130Mbps bitrate for sake of comparison, which depends on image complexity of what’s being recorded (and resolution/profile etc.) thus duration should be even longer on average overall.
**46GB internal storage assuming official qty figures are provided based on ~55Mbps and JPEGs are rough estimates based on typical JPEG compression ratio.

Generally I start recording from take off to landing as you never know what you might capture ( or miss ) you may also find that the recording you make will not be a single file ( my Mini 3 Pro reaches what looks like a max file size or time ( I always record in 4k 60fps so time / file size are generally about the same ) this will aid in editing as you wont end up with a 20 min 100 gig file but loads of 2 or 3 gig files

But as other have said - record all - edit - chop it down into little chunks - publish

Yeah I get that but most people don’t have the money or a 4k tele/screen or AI to answer life’s questions
Nice bit of info tho on you’re behalf

Then they shouldn’t be buying drones.

Allows for cropping without loss of resolution. Cheaper than a zoom lens.

This

This clip that was used for the lead in/out of the adverts on every episode was actually pulled from a bit of footage where I was just repositioning the drone to film the gardener from above.

(The related advice being to try and fly smoothly even when you’re just repositioning… you never know what might come of it)

I do the same, there’s no reason not to really

Litchi has a handy thing that starts recording for you the moment you take off. I’m surprised DJI don’t offer a setting like this in their apps

I love how the Avata will start recording both on the Goggles and the Drone on take off and so wish the others did that too by default.

But like you say with a 128gig card in the drone there is no reason to not do this

Avata 2 / DJIFPV does

There wouldn’t be if one could shoot RAW during video recording, but … we can’t :rage:, and I like photos as much as video.

As someone that flies mostly over water I have a mix of 32 and 64gb cards and change cards every battery swap just in case the worst happens.

I take mainly photos but if recording video then start recording before any movement and stop recording much after to give a bit of flexibility when editing the shots.

It’s really handy but annoying that the recording stops immediately on impact if you bin it.

I clipped a railing at weekend and it flipped and fell through a big gap to the floor below. Was hoping I had it on video but it stopped as soon as it clipped the railing.

I do wish it would keep recording after a crash as I do feel it misses out the best parts of a crash sometimes.

You must be dinging it pretty hard. I’m sure I have loads of video of grass and sky from the big meet after hitting those bastard hoops :person_shrugging:
