Visiting from Australia

Hi, my partner and I will be visiting next month. Doing a road trip. I normally fly a Mavic 2 Pro but I just got myself the mini 3 pro for traveling. Hoping to get some great shots over lakes, mountains, ruins etc. any suggestions?

Hi @Jane1 and welcome to Grey Arrows :wave:t2:

Have you seen our members map? (Click the burger-menu in the top right) You may find some pilots living near you. Feel free to add yourself to the members map too :+1:t2:

We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the #questions-and-answers category.

Looking for recommendations of places to fly? Check out our interactive map on Drone Scene - be sure to log in to gain access to the full suite of features and map layers:

And please feel free to add locations of your own too.

Our Associates are able to enjoy a lot of great services for free but our Members are eligible for a whole lot more! You can find all the details about our Membership Benefits on our FAQ

Welcome once again!

Give the Mini a good workout at home so that you are used to it and familiar with he Fly app. If you haven’t already get a couple of sets of spare props and a few batteries. And some UK specific power leads. You will need a number of memory cards and/or a large storage device for pictures and video.

You can get 4G data at a reasonable price as a pay-as-you-go SIM if you are looking to upload to the cloud

How are you travelling? By car from hotel to hotel or by van and looking after yourselves?

Don’t make a detailed itinerary - you will break it by getting sidetracked and spending too much time in one place then racing to catch up - go with the flow. Britain may be small but it is packed with things to see

Away from the coastal areas the Uk isn’t quite as inhospitable and a danger to life as the interior of Australia. The inhabitants of the islands are mostly harmless, timid creatures but they can be coaxed out of their burrows by offers of liquid refreshment.

Make sure you post in here regularly and let people know where you intend to travel then we can offer advice and arrange meet ups!

Thank you.
We are looking forward to our holiday in the UK. We’ll be there for five weeks and I am hoping to fly my mini 3 pro as much as possible. Being under 250gm I should be able to fly in most places as long as I follow the drone rules of height and distance mainly.

Hi @Jane1 - and a belated welcome :wave:t2:

Can I ask how you found Grey Arrows from the other side of the planet?

I googled drone clubs in the UK and Grey Arrows came up.

Hi Jane, welcome from the Black Country.
Just a couple of things,

  1. Bring the sun with you!
  2. If you’re flying in the mountains (North Wales, Lake District, Scottish Highlands, beware of the low flying jets. The RAF, USAF/Marines and various other European air forces use them for low flying exercises and it’s not unusual to find an F35, Typhoon, Apache or Hercules coming at you at very low levels. They only use the Tactical Training Areas and Low Fly Zones during week days between (I think) 10am and 7pm, so weekends you should be OK to fly. Look on YouTube and search for “Mach Loop” and you’ll see what I mean!

Thanks for letting me know. We’d love to watch them go past.

Where was that video taken?

Hi Jane,
It was filmed at the “Mach Loop” in North Wales. It happens nearly every day (not weekends) as long as the weather is OKish.
If you google LFA 7 (Low Flying Area 7) you’ll get a map of the N Wales area, LFA 17 is the Lake District where you’ll find Apaches (US and UK), Typhoons, F35s, F15s, Black Hawks, Hercules’, A400M Atlases, Ospreys, that just appear at low level in the valleys.
Try this for a starter:

Have fun happy flying hope you guys have a great visit.

A bit of a trek, but the cairngorms in Scotland is a must. Then further up on the west towards Glencoe is spectacular.

Thank you.
