VLOS (Again)

This is what worries me. Just because today it doesn’t warrant their attention doesn’t mean tomorrow will be the same.

I understand that PC’s have the ability to use their discretion when it comes to a lot of matters. But this all seems a bit like the fair weather friends analogy. Which is almost authoritarian when used in law…

What does that mean please - I don’t quite understand.

Just because the drone loses VLOS of you doesn’t mean you lost sight of it. It would be virtually impossible to prove unless there was video footage from your vantage point showing you in shot date and time stamped at the time.

I think in general you will only get police attention if you crash into a manned aircraft or crash and cause injury on the ground.

Keep your eyes open and ears listening for manned aircraft and avoid a collission, and you should be safe.

As long as you are sure there are no obstructions on the other side of the tower, you and the drone should be safe.

There is a BIG HOWEVER, be aware that going behind the tower may cause signal loss and your drone try to return home automatically and if not high enough it could fly into the tower.

Better to be higher than the tower so you can maintain VLOS and drone connection at all times

That’s an interesting one. When you use the POI thing to get the drone to circle around a POI, is it the controller doing the controlling or does the drone do it itself. If the latter then if the drone loses signal does it carry on with the programmed flight or do a RTH? I can’t remember but is that a setting - one or the other?

Pretty sure it stops the automatic flight when you lose the control link. It defaults to what you have asked it to do in that situation, RTH or hover in place etc… Once your control link is gone theres no way to hit pause on the movement if needed so it would be an issue for it to just carry on.

In addition to my Mini 4 Pro, I also have 2 home built quads and the controller for those certainly has a ‘Continue on pre-programmed route’ option in the event of signal loss. They were fun at the time but the Mini is way superior.

The drone-equivalent of taking your eyes off the road to check your speed or your mirrors is taking your eyes off the drone to check remaining battery. Both are expected, even required, actions.

Losing sight of a drone behind a tower means you’ve chosen to fly your drone where you can’t see it. The driving analogy would be picking up your phone to check your DMs.

I thought this might make all mavic type drones a different classification… Because at that point you aren’t directly controlling the craft. Meaning you would actually need to get the more costly license for autonomous flights… :money_mouth_face:

Just ensure you have set your RTH height higher than tower ( or trees or whatever else around) - drone then climbs before returning

I think I need to read the manual or do a test on a low height building and set RTH to above the height of the building. I can’t imagine the electronics in something like a Mini 2/4k would have the electronics in them to do it within the drone, but maybe the Mini 4 Pro would have the intelligence built in. The same may or maynot apply to waypoints, but ive only just brought the Mini 4 Pro and dont want to crash lol

Just ordered a blimp from Temu

Certainly has, and never let me down yet. Just don’t use Nifty mode!

Thanks id heard it has some form of intelligent return home, only had 1 flight at the moment with it and also got a Neo with Goggles N3 so too much for my old brain to take in in one go lol

@WoodyDronesOn Just set your RTH to Preset, Paul, change the height to about 55m (or higher if flying over an object or building etc. Note though that RTH will not work until your drone is 100m away from your Home Point. The mini 4 Pro will use its 360 degrees object avoidance capability if the ambient light is sufficient enough for its sensors to do their thing, and will warn you if its disabled through poor lighting conditions.
