Continuing the discussion from Vulcan Bomber:
I remember these flying out over my house as a child, my mother called them “harbingers of doom”. We only learned later that they brought us peace for years. Great filmwork. Thank you.
As the airport is still used by the Police and Coastguard at times, can you say what process you went through to get clearance, and if there were any hiccups?
P.
I’m sure I have a picture of her, used to be a regular at Blackpool air show, the last one still flying, at the time. So sad to see it sitting there looking forlorn. There used to be one standing at the entrance to Blackpool airport (xl391), it had been bought by the airport owners for £5000 (scrap value). However it was sadly neglected and eventually deemed unsafe so was eventually scrapped, for I believe £4000. About the price of a Mavic 3 premium combo.
It did a final tour of the country before it was retired to “Sunny Donny”, which apparently South Yoks tried to block as they feared they couldn’t control the crowds wanting to see her in flight before she finally landed at that airport.
Paulmouncer, I did not say they are based there, I said they both still use it.
I would still like to know what process the OP went through to get clearance, as I would love to fly there.
P.
I’ll be honest, i’ve seen neither use the airport since the airport closed.
I live a few minutes walk away and work from home most days so would say i’ve a better understanding of the comings and goings than most.
The coastguard is based at Humberside and regularly flies over but hasn’t landed for a long time.
The police moved to leeds bradford back when the airspace was reclassified but has now permanently moved to east midlands airport.
Thanks Howard. I have seen both on trackers, but they must have just overflown or done a PAR without touching down.
The last time I tried, it was in the locked Geozone days
The coastguard loves the route over the airport to the peaks then back the same way to humberside.
I can tell what it is by the sound these days as it does it that often.
The police plane was one of the last users of DSA before moving twice before settling in East Mids.
Again, living on what used to be the airforce base, I could tell the aircraft just by its sound.
If you update your flysafe on your drone you should now see that the whole area is flyable.
It will still give the standard warning but doesn’t need to be unlocked.
Thanks for that.
I use Altitude Angel, which still shows it as an FRZ!
P
Officially, it is in still an FRZ.
Its an odd done the maps say so, but NATS say not

There may be signs of life from 2026?
Yeah they’ve a bit of work to do yet.
Lots of airport related development and loads more houses also planned too.
