Yuneec Typhoon H and NFZ’s

Yesterday I received the Typhoon H Pro I detailed in the “Today I treated Myself” section a few days ago. As expected it has a few small issues, a cracked motor mount (easy fix) and no pan and tilt camera function (again probably an easy fix).

What I wasn’t expecting was when it acquired a GPS lock I was told I was in a NFZ and it refused to arm.

For reference this my location, depicted by the yellow dot, in relation to the real NFZ.

I contacted Yuneec UK whom were quick to respond, but they told me they don’t deal with NFZ issues anymore. I’ve contacted Yuneec EU but I’m still waiting on a response. Yuneec USA handed the NFZ unlocking responsibilities to a dealer, who charges $100 for the modified GUI that Yuneec handed out for free in the USA.

I know Yuneec owners are far and few between these days, but if there are any on here that may have run into a similar issue as mine I’d be curious as to how you resolved it.

I didn’t even know Yuneec drones had NFZs built in :scream:

That leaves only Autel who are restriction-free  :person_shrugging:t2:

Are there any dedicated Yuneec forums @Nidge that cover modding? To remove the NFZ database completely?

There’s a couple of Facebook Groups I’m subbed to, I’m still waiting for the UK one to authorise my posts.

Yuneec copied DJI’s first attempts at NFZ’s, where the radius was 7km. I had the same problem with my Yuneec Q500 but I found a modified FW for it.

There’s some confusion about NFZ’s on the Typhoon H. Many claim, mainly in the UK, that they haven’t had issues. Some say Yuneec removed them in future FW releases, and some say these releases were time limited. My Typhoon H appears to be on old FW, dated Nov2016, so I’ll dig out some SD cards and see if the updates change anything.

To be honest I’m not as frustrated as some may think. Other than the issues I’ve detailed the complete kit is very clean and doesn’t appear to have been used and abused. Even the cardboard shroud that was part of the original packing is devoid of any creases, and the supplied USB cable was still sealed in its little box. I think for the £250 I paid I did alright.

Don’t forget Parrot, and my Blade Chroma’s, which are essentially Yuneec Q500’s, are restriction free also. Oh and my Powervision PEX, even though it shows odd polygon shaped NFZ’s on the map, doesn’t appear to be restricted either.

Never had any issues with the Typhoon refusing to arm and take off because of a NFZ. As @PingSpike commented, I didn’t think the Typhoon had a NFZ database in its software. :man_shrugging:

I’m beginning to wonder if what I have is a US import on the original US firmware

The reason for my suspicion is that it came with a US power cord, and all the comments I’ve seen about NFZ’s have been from US owners.

I still need to dig out some suitable micro-Sd Cards to load up newer firmware to check my hypothesis.

Tagging @stevesb in too.

I think that EU and UK spec Typhoons have the following in their model number RTHEU or RTHUK. Would double check but the model number on my Typhoon is hidden under the wrap :man_facepalming:

I’ll check tonight after work.

As far as im aware there’s no NFZ restrictions on the typhoon H. I’ve flown in wartons NFZ with no restriction info coming up. (I had permission)

Cheers Steve, just out of curiosity I wonder if Yuneec would CE mark the Typhoons that were to be exported to the USA?

Can you not see the whacking great CE letters in the middle of that photo there Dave?

I can see the CE mark on Steve’s Typhoon ! as I take it it was exported to Europe and bought in the UK :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I’m wondering if the Typhoon @Nidge has purchased does not have a CE mark it could be one that was exported to the USA originally.

Sorry Dave, I completely misread your post  :man_facepalming:t2:

Unfortunately the underside of my Typhoon H is covered up by thr RealSense module. However, I’ve been having a rummage about in all the backpack pockets and in the envelope that contains all the quickstart guides is a warranty slip with the contact details for the Yuneec US service centre.

In the meantime I have been reliably informed that all Typhoons have FRZ’s embedded in them. These have a radius of around 8km, and in the UK they are only around major civil airports, which in my case is LBA. There’s no mention of Military or private airfields.

I contacted Yuneec UK yesterday, and to their credit they replied very quickly. Unfortunately they no longer deal with FRZ queries and instead they advised me to contact Yuneec Europe, which I have done but so far I’ve heard nothing back from them.

Rose tinted glasses are working then?..

Why not, they mention part 15 of FCC rules which is an American issue on that sticker.:thinking:

Quelle surprise. Yuneec Europe have replied, and yes they can unlock the FRZ’s. But… They claim I have to send the drone to Germany???

They then came up with the suggestion that they might be able to teach the Yuneec UK guy (I think there’s only one guy now). So my suggestion was to teach me. After all how hard can it be to plug in a USB cable and upload a file to the drone from the Gui, as per the original instructions from Yuneec?

Oh how the once mighty have fallen.

I’d be interested to here their reply.

Did they say who he was, or where he was based?

My statement based more on sarcasm than based on fact. The guy whom replied to the email I sent to Yuneec UK was the same guy the German representative suggested he’d teach, and in a number of posts in the Typhoon H FB group it’s the same guy mentioned when someone talks of Yuneec UK.

The Yuneec US facility went belly-up sometime back. As I understand an outfit called YuneecSkins has taken on sales and servicing. YuneecSkins reached out to me on FB offering to unlock my Typhoon H, if I crossed their palm with $100.
