I’ve just done my A2CofC with Copterz. I’ve seen a bit of criticism of them here and there but to be honest I found them fine. It only cost £49+vat and the exam was a breeze. I haven’t sat an exam for over 30 years so I was apprehensive but there was no need to be. I acknowledge the restrictions of non-CE marked aircraft but I thought for £58 why not! I also have the BMFA certificate which allows me to fly to with 30m of uninvolved people.

Dont forget the caveat on that though, where you can use it

  • Any established model flying club site. Clubs operating in a ‘built up area’ (This means an area substantially used for industrial, recreational, commercial or residential purposes) must conduct a risk assessment and have suitable mitigations in place within their ‘Field Safety Rules’. The BMFA can assist with this.
  • Any other suitable site which is not a ‘built-up area’.
  • Within a ‘built up area’ if the flying site is within an area which is only used substantially for recreational purposes (for example playing fields or sports pitches) and a risk assessment has been carried out. Again, the BMFA can assist with this.

An A2 CofC is the same regardless of where you obtain it.

And is it worth doing. I’ve not flown since summer and only realised the new stuff yesterday. I’m a hobbyist and amateur photographer. My understanding is that if I do this course I’ll have more freedom with flying compared to previously? If not I’m more or less on the old rules is that right? I fly a Mavic Air 1.

I too have an Air 1 (and just a few others)

I have the A2 C of C and, using GADC’s own app - Good 2 Go - I can only fly more than 50 metres from people in a non-urban area if I have no qualification other than operator and flyer id (DMARES)

It changes markedly with an A2 CofC qualification if you have a drone weighing between 259 and 500 grams:

I can fly at any distance greater than zero metres from people (but not directly overhead ) in an industrial, commercial or residential area - recreational and non-urban areas too.

This might be a ridiculous question  but who actually stores the information of who has the A2 CofC qualification? I ask because have seen others say it doesn’t appear beside your ID with CAA or have I missed something  a print at home certificate :flushed:

The RAE that issued your A2CofC is tasked with maintaining a register which is then audited by the CAA :+1: :+1: :+1:

… but agree - would be helpful if the CAA had an online register — which could be used to deter whingeing “jobs worths” when you’re flying IAW your A2CofC. :man_shrugging:

The qualification is the same - however the content does vary a lot - they teach different topics and present it in a different way.

I agree, I just don’t think that’s what he was asking

Cheers but @PingSpike your correct. My question was more, what stops randoms from just printing out a certificate :man_shrugging: scenario… a "concerned " member of the public has called the police saying someone if flying close. Police turn up, you show certificate :+1:t2: all good (optimistically) but is it not kind of like your driving licence and other tests passes on that? Is it not the equivalent of the local test station keeping your results and not DVLA :man_shrugging: with random audits. Or am I over complicating it all
