Can’t comment on other courses but the UAVHub course has plenty that isn’t in CAP722, on things like weather conditions, drone batteries etc, plus some bonus material on military low flying areas that I thought was pretty good.
Probably not Chris, as the course is based on this document (along with others) but I still find it difficult to read and take in all that information. Much better (for me!!) to have it explained in a good concise way. I’m probably not alone in that.
You aren’t alone.
The standard A2 CofC syllabus is on p33-35 here:
The course I’ve done goes well beyond that, which was good.
I been hesitating for a long time if this course is worth it.
I watched the fantastic video by @ianinlondon explaining it so simple for everyone.
I will use my Mavic pro in the countryside and my Mini 2 for everything else. No A2 CofC needed.
Will not say I never take it but atm happy to fly with care from my garden and over neighbour houses with my Mini2 and walk into my back field and fly Mavic pro into the countryside
As a complete newbie unable even to fly in my garden as I live within the Yeovil ATZ, I’m spending my time studying as much as possible. Taking advantage of the Christmas pricing from UAVHUB is a no brainier as the A2 cofc 5 year validity dates from exam success, if that is an issue of course.
Thanks to everyone for the discussion threads. Very helpful!
I’ve just completed the theory part of the A2 c of c with a company called i-Red and it’s broken down into bite sized pieces for anyone who doesn’t like sitting down for hours on end. I’ve got the exam to do yet but the course has been very good so far. £99 on offer at the moment.
I think most online courses will let you shop and start wherever suits you.
Good luck with your exam
Ned
I have recently paid for my online training course with UAVHub, passing the exam and now have my A2CofC qualification for the next five years. I note comments about parting with £99 plus to basically take a multiple choice quiz not dis-similar to the CAA one to get a Flyer I.D but what I did not see mentioned (apologies if I missed it) is that an element of that goes to an independent examination company. The exam is taken under fairly tight conditions to include having the examiner viewing/listening throughout the test via your computer’s web cam and microphone. The examiner uses the webcam to ensure the student does not access aids either by paperwork to hand or other means. Although the test is not hard if you have studied and taken the mock exams, there is not really any scope to cheat. Gaining the qualification by this method at least adds some credibility.
The benefit to me is that now I can fly my M2P in congested areas as long as I maintain the separation distances required from uninvolved people. Without it, I would have an expensive drone and accessories that I could only use in the A3 sub category…open countryside and 150m separation. Allied to my recent purchase of a Mini 2, I now feel that I have as much flexibility to fly with more freedom during the transitional period. Like many, I sincerely hope that there is scope for the CAA to come to an arrangement to allow legacy <2kg drones to be certified for A2 operation. I certainly won’t be spending another £1500 on a replacement for the M2P!!
Finally re: this training. I now feel more confident about flying and dealing with those among the general public that take umbrage. As long as I am flying within the drone code and within the parameters laid out by having the A2CofC, I will be more than happy to inform any busy bodies that I am qualified and registered with the CAA to do what I am doing. (Whilst ever so discreetly telling them to feck off and get a life )
Thanks. Looking forward to some better weather to get some practice in too before I take the exam.
Are there no options to pay for nothing else other than the test for those of us autodidacts?
I don;t know if they do any discounts for any disabilities!
Speaking personally and with only limited knowledge of the subject, I would be surprised if you found that option. With UAVHub for example you cannot even skip to the mock exam/revision section, you have to go through every module. I suppose this can act as some ‘proof’ that you as a student have actually completed the required training.
As far as I am aware the companies that run these courses put these details forward to the CAA to help evidence the justification for assessing a student as competent. I could be wrong but I assume it is all part of checks and balances.
I have no doubt that if a cheaper ‘test only’ option was available it would generate a lot of interest but I have not seen anyone advertising it.
It just seems such a waste of time and money for those of us able to pass these sort of exams without being patronised.
I understand your frustrations but it’s the CAA who state the candidates MUST go through the entire syllabus… If there are companies out there who aren’t doing that, then they aren’t fulfilling the obligations placed on them as a training provider, by the CAA.
Feedback so far has been that even VERY experienced remote pilots have learned a lot & really enjoyed it!
Candidates must but training providers don’t need to?
Patronising no, thorough yes.
You seem pretty confident!
I thought I was quite knowledgeable before sitting this exam, turns out I’m thick as shit.
Learning about weather, fixed wings and a whole lot more is definitely worth the extra time. I wouldnt of wanted to jump straight in with out learning first.
Sorry, I don’t understand what you mean… Are you implying that the training providers aren’t capable of delivering the training as they, themselves, haven’t completed it?
If you’d like to take a look at the training and see if there’s anything useful in there for you, drop me a DM… I’ll happily give you access to the entire thing for free and you can then make up your mind if it’s useless… or not!
Or give him a mock exam under exam conditions to see if he can live up to his claim
Haha - that could be a good shout… Although can you imagine how pi**ed he’d be if he passes and can’t receive his certificate until he’s completed the learning in the course?!
