Hey drone geek! Only just seen this sorry - I’ve been away from the forum (and the web) for a while due to severe illness in the family…
Waaaaaay too lat enow, I know but just to say sorry if you didn’t get a code at the time. We did have a follow-up process for all people who entered the free trial (when it was £139) but sometimes those emails get bounced back or sent to spam if they’re identified by your provider as ‘spam’.
We don’t go hard on the sales-side of things, as we try and let our reputation and quality of product be the thing which makes people decide if we’re for them or not!
As I say, way to late to the party now obviously but if there’s anything I can do to help, please don’t hesitate to give me a shout!
Hey Sweet - this is exactly why we have to push people through the course and can’t let them just skip ahead to the exams…
The syllabus is a mandatory requirement from the CAA. Much the same way as if we were still doing the training in a classroom (remember those days?!), you’d have to sit there for the day and listen to the instructor; everyone has to pass through the training in order for them to be ‘eligible’ for the exam.
I’ve no doubt people could skip to the end and pass (and they likely can with some courses where you ‘teach yourself’ from .pdf’s) but that’s not how we do things.
Not at all. Firstly it was a question. And the question was, according to regs, if candidates have to go through the entire syllabus, can that be on their own or does it have to be taught directly by the training provider? Or can they just do it by themselves?
I have an interest in aviation and have done plenty of wing aerodynamics and meteorology in my Pilot (paragliding) licence exams. And a lot of it is common knowledge for a lot of people (things like battery c-rate, cg, cb cloud, wind shear and wind rotor, high/low pressure systems).
I wouldn’t like to say whether I would pass or not but I would love to take the exam with no revision to see how far common sense can get you. I did a GVC mock about a year ago and passed without issue with no prep. Is that meant to be easier or harder than A2CofC?
Either way, I know it won’t be a complete piece of piss like the Operator ID exam. but surely 75% on a multiple choice exam should be easily possible with minimal preparation?
Sorry, not a big issue, don’t worry I was only saying that if the requirement is that “candidates MUST go through the entire syllabus” that doesn’t necessarily predicate that it must be that particular training provider taking them through it (nor that they are responsible for demonstrating it). There’s a difference between a candidate reading the syllabus and being taught it by someone else/from other resources. (Of course this is harder to say without being able to see the full syllabus.)
You’ll probably be ok with the exam, as would most people, especially with some additional aviation knowledge but that isn’t the point, unfortunately…
The issue seems to be around the fact that the CAA mandate that you must go through the training. This is how all (regulated) aviation works - As a Military Flying Instructor, I could DEFINITELY pass my ATPL(H) Exams but I need to go through the theory course before the CAA will let me even attend the test centre. (I gues it’s to stop people ‘fluking’ their way through the exam and being granted a licence with potentially NO or little knowledge! ).
That’s just how it is I’m afraid (I fuck**g hate myself for using that phrase… because that’s NO EXCUSE for things still being like that!) but bear in mind that as a member of a democratic society (and a potential client of the CAA) you can always complain directly to them, or the DfT, or your MP to tell them that you think the system should be changed. I have, because I have my own thoughts on the CAA and their position within the ‘drone’ world!
Back to the exam; our pass %age is 80 - there’s a lot which focusses on the principles of flight and met side of things but there’s a lot of specifics on the A2 itself too… Drop me a DM if you’d like and I’ll take some time out to run you through a mock to see what you think?
But honestly, for £99 you’re not getting a bad deal at all given the quality of the content, the guidance you receive and the support you get; as many members on here will attest to! (Thanks all!)
P.S. As an ‘aviator’ already, do the BHPA not stress that you should take every opportunity to expand your knowledge and become a more rounded aviator? Who knows, one of the anecdotes in the course might save your life one day when you’re in the harness and you spot something I’ve talked about? NEVER miss an opportunity to learn… I do, every-time I fly manned or unmanned even with more than 5000 flying hours!
I took the course in Dec. Excellent. I have 8000 hours flying experience and still found things to plant in my brain that I was not aware of. Learn every day it keeps the mind active, even when you get as old as me!!!
I started doing the Pfco with 3iC last year and it was dog awful! The lectures? were just rehashings of other people’s work (I think), had American based slides, there were dogs barking and kids shouting in the background etc etc.
I did Matt’s Trial lesson, and shortly after doing that and having a chat with Tim, I had an email offering the 40 English pounds off offer, which I obviously said no thank you to, and went on to do the A2 course. Passed with 100%! and immediately started the GVC (just waiting for the12th Feb for the exam). The course is very professional and well laid out, and easy to understand. If you don’t understand it, just play it again Sam and this time listen!
Being in the training game myself (NVQ assessor for 21 years up to degree apprentices) I’ve seen some really (no, really) bad “training courses”, but the UAVHUB one has got to be in the top 3 for ease of completion, if there were biscuits supplied, I’d put it in the top 2!
Matt, do you accept Standard Learning Credits from the military against your courses? We are entitled to so many a year (iv never used them so don’t know any of the stats unfortunately)
I do know that It covers 80% of the course to a certain figure.
Hi,
Just thought I’d add to the discussion - as I passed my A2 CofC today with 100% score. This was down to the excellent exam syllabus training in UAVHUB which I can seriously (and highly) recommend to any other members considering their CofC certification. There is no doubt too, that the mock exam papers they provide on line are extremely helpful and which show you where your learning weaknesses are to enable you go go back to the relevant module and revise. 5 Stars (from me) to UAVHUB for the professionalism which shines through in their A2 CofC course.
Thanks @macspite, good point about the Mini / Mini 2 with add-ons; I’m less convinced that there will be a big secondhand clamour for MA1s, given the capabilities of the Mini 2, but maybe!
