Advice on starting your own business?

Hi all,

I have just purchased 6 months commercial insurance and started advertising services with my drone. I am doing this all totally solo so would appreciate any advice from those who have been in a similar position. I am currently self advertising using social media, but plan to create a 60 second video to catch peoples attention and covering some of the uses I can think of for a drone.

Currently my thoughts are usage for inspections / surveys, estate agency matters, lost/missing things/creatures and special occasions. One of the main issues I envisage is file transfer if peple want large files, I have dropbox as an option but that s limited to 2GB. I guess memory sticks may be the answer there. I don’t see many adverts for drone pilots so I wonder whether this will be a total flop or could take off. Nice pun!

Hi a possible good place to start might be google drone photography or video in your location and see the kind of thing that established businesses are shooting
From my experience clients want images of new biuld properties such as business parks or warehouses
Also shot shots done in urban areas
Can I also suggest you buy a small external hard drive for your computer so that you can store everything in one place
Good luck

Thanks, luckily I already have seperate drives and around 1.5TB of storage (soon to be 3) so storage should be ok. I am just not that savvy with transferring it via email but will find out soon enough. I also have no idea of charges, I was thinking like 50 quid call out plus 25 per hour but friends who are thinking of doing similar are saying thats way too low.

Hiya,
When I’ve done commercial work I use ‘Wetransfer’ unless the client requests otherwise. That way you always have the original copy of your work and can retouch any footage if needed by your client. I think one the best tips for starting out is to try and get a website up and running (guilty here too). When I look at others that seems to be key element. Regullar YouTube updates, and Drone Safe Register is good place to promote yourself… I can’t claim to be a guru yet but these are my thoughts. Wishing you every success.

Thanks. I would consider signing up to the likes of drone safe but I think I would need a few bites first, shelling out a few hundred quid at the start feels a bit much but maybe that’s what I need to do to get it started.

And they’re correct! Wedding photographers charge at least 4x that per hour. Don’t charge by the hour anyway, charge by the package. There are plenty of people out there willing to make a buck on the side, so you have to be REALLY good at what you do, and offer something a little different from the rest. Rather than file transfer, think about adding the cost of a micro SD card to every job that you can post out?

Double that and you’re nearer the mark, but still cheap.

Factor in travelling, editing. Tax and insurance otherwise you’re just hitting minimum wage.

If you’re doing a roof survey ask what roofers are charging per hour, and work on that.

As a self employed person myself, all be it in a completely different industry, he wont have to worry for a little while as the personal allowance is £12,500 before HMRC start taxing you. However if he is already employed in another job full time I’m not sure how that works out as I’ve never done both at the same time.

At his considered rate it’s gonna be a long long while

Im a high rate tax payer and in my existing second job I am hammered.

Speak to a reputable accountant, you may be surprised. :+1:

Just for what it’s worth. I know someone who uploads all their stuff to YouTube and then sends links. It’s private and nearly all download managers will take the video directly from it - it can then be deleted. It’s like a company will have a fat internet connection anyway so downloading won’t be an issue.

When i started professional photography many years ago… the society photographer who taught me stuff beyond operating a camera told me off regarding my pricing: …

‘you’re thinking like an amateur!’

and he was right…

you won’t be respected for being cheap whatever you produce … sad to say

Thanks all.

All greatly received, just about to post my first advert attempt in the vids section.

Right.

I have made a new one and taken on board all the above. I think it is better. I may still tweak, but I can at least post this one up on the local ad pages tomorow as it is advertisement day. Further critique welcomed.

I have a Google business set up now too which may help.

To add, it days it is still processing up to HD, and I have changed the thumbnail so rather than the image above it is my end page with contact details.

I wanted to provide an update to this as I have been on quite a journey since posting, and it may be of use to others in the future. I have reached equilibrium, there is good and bad news however it is what it is and I know where I am at so to speak.

I started flying and doing all this in December last year, so I am at around 4 months in now. I have just successfully completed my first paid job, so I am giving myself a virtual pat on the back. However, I have put far too much time and effort into this in general, and despite this accomplishment, work is scarce and I suspect will remain so permanently. I have a full time job in London and I also have another driving job, so this for me is a 3rd job. I have put all my time into it though since Xmas to give it the best chance I can. Its kind of worked - I have a google business, a Youtube page and a following on my local social media groups, but I have found out this is too niche.for the following reasons:

“Go and speak to estate agents”. No - don’t bother. These are the last people who want your service. Why on earth would a local estate agent pay you £100 - 200 for a collation of stills or a video when they could buy their own drone instead and do it all themselves for no cost. And this is what they are doing. I have been in contact with around 20 local agents, a few have engaged but the rest haven’t. They all have their own drone, and are self sufficient because it makes no business sense that they pay someone else to do what they can do for free. They only want simple quick shots for a listing, they don’t need posh videos or colour grading, it is of no interest to them as their customers are quick clicking one after the other.

“What about roofers and local builders?”. Exactly the same as above. They all have their own equipment because it makes business sense, they can do their own surveys and fault finding instantly and at no cost. They aren’t paying a third party hundreds to do this.

“Photography and Weddings?”. Awkward. Go onto any local group and you will find 100 photographers all touting for business. Everyone is a photographer, or a hot tub hirer, or a pet sitter e.t.c. Weddings are only complimented by drone footage so you would need to collaborate with a static photographer, they seem unwilling to engage as why should they split their earnings? Weddings are also long gutty days where you would need to be available around 8 to 10 hours to capture everything. Nor worth it for me unless I was paid for it, but that would be a huge bill.

“Residential showcases / imagery”. I think this is where it is at, however, you find someone that actually wants this. Not many people are thinking about a showcase video over their morning coffee. For those that are, they are generally higher earners who are not going to use local business on social media. They will just go to Google, which will throw up the big shiny website with the best SEO (search engine optimisation) and pay huge amounts for what will likely be a generic video (I have seen many and believe I can do better). So trying to make contact with your target market is seriously tricky.

“Local Business”. I also think this is where it is at, but, obvious hurdles here. I have done some promo work at care homes, residential homes and lesiure centres. They all have their own marketing person, who in turn will have their own website builder and media contacts, so the relationships are already founded and for a newbie it is nigh on impossible to get a foot in. An example of this is my video of Northcote House, part of Audley Villages. They have an existing 2 min video of the location which is highly generic - straight line / bland / vanilla type video. They have seen my 4 min 30 version at sunrise, and that’s all great, but they have existing processes in place and why would they change those? I could have gone to many of their sites nationally and delivered media for them, and likely at less than what they are paying, but the conversation isn’t even there to have as marketing just isn’t a priority for many businesses especially when they have their own process in place.

“Adverts”. This is where I have found the penny to drop. Supporting local business with local adverts. This is all well and good but the ceiling of opportunity feels low at the moment. That may change. For context I have had to spend a considerable amount of time making numerous demo videos simply to post as examples. I have been posting relentlessly across countless social media sites since December - and have had a couple of questions and one success. I am going to continue doing this as it is possible time of year plays a part, but it feels slow. I have also undersold myself which is a big lesson going forward. I have just created and posted 4 adverts on my channel, 3 minis and 1 long corporate one. I charged £165 for this - however it has taken me weeks of work. I take responsibility for this and it is a learning curve, but going forward I need to up the price to reflect my efforts - site visits, footage, editing, presenting, hosting, adding to memory stick and delivering. I have posted one of the short vids below but you can see the others if you go onto my channel.

So in summary this is a tough gig. Google “Drones xxxxxx” replacing xxxxxx with your location. I bet you find loads of them, as I have. A lot of people have jumped on the bandwagon - I have always said anyone can launch a drone but find me someone that can do the whole package well, as in fly well, edit well, be communicative, be efficient e.t.c. I believe I am those things but I don’t know how to advertise myself efficiently. Paying for advertising doesn’t make sense, looking at the costs I would be at a permanent loss. Or maybe I have it all wrong - who knows, you can tell me if you like I won’t get upset.

I am going to continue plugging away as it is still fun. I believe I only need one company to like what I do and offer me something a little more cyclical but who knows. I am also conscious that I predominantly lives in urbansville so I am trying to make average locations look great. I don’t have access to sweeping expanse of stunning nature, but whenever I visit I will take my drone.

Hope this helps someone else looking at doing this more seriously. Good luck!

We did say its a race to the bottom ;o(

At least you gave it a go

True, and I haven’t given up. But irony of ironies, I have just dropped off the hard files to the company I have done the work for and they are over the moon. They have just asked me if they can use me for all their future media, and say they will be in touch to cover a range of upcoming projects. So - I might have got that repeat business after all. Feeling really happy that they are so pleased.

I just wanted to share for anyone interested in getting work, there are a few national groups on Facebook specifically for people asking for photographers and videographers. These are a for a variety of different events but seem to be weddings, business coverage and sports/leisure events in the main. I have only just starting using them, the only snag is that when someone posts up asking for someone, its like a pack of sharks attacking a lump of meat - loads and loads of people offering their services. Perseverance might get you somewhere if you were interested though.
