Alternatives to DJI Fly

I’m getting ready for a summer of extensive flying (weather permitting… so maybe one or two flights!) … anyhoo… I have been using Litchi on my ancient Mini SE to give it some more capabilities. It has been fun but is Litchi the best alternative to DJI Fly… According to the Play Store neither Litchi for DJI Drones nor Litchi Magic Leash have been updated since August 2023 which implies either it is perfect or the developers are losing interest.

So are there better alternative DJI Flying Apps?

This

No App will be updated to benefit this drone

I get that but it does support drones even up to the Mini 3 as far as I know

Also worth remembering that DJI killed off their iOS SDK at that point which severely restricted third party app development from that point onwards

Android here so its all good…

DRONELINK - any views?

Dronelink is excellent on getting modes not available normally on the dji fly app.

also note that some newer drones have no support as they have no SDK (such as the mini 4 pro, Mavic 3, classic, cine or pro)

what do you have wrong with DJI FLY?

what does it not do that you want it to do??

the mini 3 pro also only has partial litchi support via litchi pilot app

Maven Evo works extremely well with the mini 3 pro. Waypoints - on the fly and pre-planned- plus tracking, poi manoeuvres etc. I’ve found it faultless with Android.
Might be time for an eBay upgrade!

Generally DJI FLY is fine for normal flight control but it is lacking in some of the more ‘intelligent’ features like those in Litchi.
I found the DJI ‘Orbit’ wholly unusable, the flight path never followed the path you thought you had created. It was the cause of more than one “tree incident”. Litchi allows you to specify centre, radius and height which is much better.

As above for ‘orbit’ or ‘circle’ Litchi also has pre-planned missions, waypoints, follow mode and track though I haven’t used track.

I am aware that some of these features are native to newer drones and I am looking to upgrade but haven’t yet decided whether to go for another mini or something bigger.

Yes indeed, an upgrade is in the plan but whether its a mini or something bigger I don’t know yet

not heard of Maven Evo… must have been living in a cave… still using a mini 3 pro so most of the autonomous flight bits have always worked well, ok no waypoints (mini 4 pro for those / litchi pilot)

Get a mini 4 pro and you can put all the time you spent messing around with Litchi and similar to one side and focus on capturing decent videography and photography instead!!!

As an aside, is a Mini 4 pro more wind tolerant than previous minis?

Will it fly in stronger winds?

Google ( DJI ) says

DJI Mini 4 Pro, DJI Mini 3, and DJI Mini 4K come equipped with a Level 5 wind resistance of 38kph

It’s android only I’m afraid. Dji withdrew SDK support for iOS.

Only on the newer drones

The older Maven app still works on iOS for older drones

I stand corrected.

Dronelink - best for grid flying - expensive - price location specific - you may want to use a VPN

Yep - easily up to 20mph (at height too) - there’s a useful on screen attitude indicator too which shows how ‘tilted’ the drone is in wind…so although it can determine RTH batt capacity req’d regardless, it’s a useless aid👍 I use it to search for club mate slope soaring rc planes when control is lost … and by definition, slope soaring is often in winds up to 30mph
