That is exactly my point, I am a responsible adult, I buy my drones to fly them “legaly”, why do I need permission from someone sitting behind a computer screen in China(or wherever they are)to do that???
But it is something you should not HAVE to do.
Are all drone users ‘responsible adults?’ I think that if it was easier to fly in restricted areas, more idiots would be able to fly their drones where restrictions apply, causing more bad publicity and giving the authorities even more ammunition to ban their use.
My opinion obviously, but valid.
You could always use Drone Hacks to remove this ‘feature’. I have on both the Mini 2 and M2P. Never have to worry about DJI Geo Zones again.
I have them as well now but that also gives you another headache with firmware updates because DJI are so paranoid about having control they keep trying to block such addons. Plus it is another unnecessary expense on top of the cost of the drone.
But all of our quoted examples are not restricted areas, they have only been restricted by DJI not the authority that matters here being the CAA.
Okay, true, but a lot of the areas that are protected, can be overridden by either a phone call or clicking a box before taking off. If that puts off the mindless tossers that buy a drone and completely ignore the rules that those of us with an interest in the hobby follow, then in my opinion, it’s worth it.
There is a lot of public resentment regarding drones, the potential for infringing their privacy and the much publicised potential for them to cause injury, which is made worse by the clickbait headlines found on social media. Another episode like the one at Gatwick could make the hobby illegal, so anything that helps to prevent that should be welcomed. I get that it can be frustrating, but it would be even worse if we weren’t legally allowed to fly at all and with Boris’s boys in charge, anything could happen!
I take your point but that is what laws are for, that is what NFZ’s are for, a lot of the time those laws are broken by ignorance, how many posts do you see on social media people asking for an explanation of certain flying regs, to me it is not mindless idiots it is confusion caused by the wording of many of the sections in CAP 722 and the way they can be interpreted as well as lack of education when people purchase drones, yes there are some mindless idiots but that is true for any activity. It is law that you must have insurance, tax and an MOT on your car but people ignore this, do we make everyone contact a control centre to prove they are responsible drivers before they drive in certain areas??
DJI geo zones are all about negating liability on DJI as a company, which is fine, the problem is that thay have used a one size fits all approach for the whole world and this has resulted in many areas of the UK(and other countries) having irrelevant geo zones and some areas not having relevant geo zones(Blackpool airport as an example).
DJI were ahead of the curve regarding consumer drone technology, thankfully other drone manufacturers are now catching up and also taking a more sensible approach to regulation and control, now that there are other options I for one am prepared to give those other options a go and enjoy only having to stick to guidelines and laws set by the CAA and not the manufacturer of my drones.
Worrying about mindless idiots in the hobby is futile because that ellement will always be there and as already discussed there are ways around DJI geo zones.
If we could keep this thread on the subject of the Autel Nano drone please everyone.
Feel free to start a new thread if you wish to continue the DJI Geozone conversations, or revive one of the many existing threads on that subject.
Thank you.
I keep trying to love this drone. How do Autel manage to keep fukcing up their Obstacle Avoidance… Why is this still an issue?
Nice Camera; shame about the drone…
The expression on your face in the thumbnail saves me watching the vid.
Did they send you one for free
After watching that video - I’d be absolutely gutted. But equally thankful that I cancelled my order.
Roll on Mini 3
20 seconds into the video… That’s all it took …
Edinburgh Drone Company sent me one to try out for a week…
Yep, I’ve waited for @ianinlondon to do a no holds barred review of this drone, as quite simply I like Ian’s values and trust what he says.
I for one will not be buying this drone, and by the look of that expression on the thumb nail, I’m sure Ian would have sent his back if he hadn’t cancelled the order.
I loath obstacle avoidance sensors with a passion, so it’s permanently disabled on the three 2.5 drones I own that have this “feature”. 2.5 because the FPV drone effectively has proximity sensors.
I have such a self loathing personality that if I were to crash into a stationary object I’d openly accept it was all my fault and ineptness, and I don’t deserve to have nice things.
For me its second only to object tracking, if someone can prove me otherwise with a half decent tracking video that I couldn’t shoot in manual better I might reconsider.
Save the weight for shit that matters like better batteries.
My experience with the Nano plus so far…Took delivery of it a few days ago but have not had time to unpack it even, last night at around 10pm I got it all out, first impressions were good although I do not really like the battery charging hub, it seems a bit flimsy and the battery connection is vague, had to keep checking that the batteries were locked in properly(probably just me being anxious). Once everything was charged up I fired it up, registered and the expected updates began, screen message said it would take about 15 minutes, after 45 minutes it was only showing 62% complete, after 1hr still only 62% so I closed it all down. On starting it up again the controller and drone would not connect, after going through the app menu I found a “bind another drone” option, after going through the onscreen instructions several times I finally got the drone and controller talking to each other and a check on the firmware version confirmed that everything was upto date.(don’t know what happened there but all seems good now).
Flew it this morning, UAV forecast showing 29 mph wind gusts from the East at 150ft(borderline whether I would fly the Mini 2 but thought it would be a good test for the Nano +), It hovered stable enough at 150ft, put it in ludicrous mode and set off against the wind, I know in these conditions the Mini 2 would get around 4-6mps, the Nano plus got just around 1.6mps, confirming that it is not as good in the wind as the Mini 2. I also had the avoidance sensors flashing the odd warning on the screen, not as often as @ianinlondon did but a few times and very briefly(the sun was not as bright as on Ian’s video though).
Those of you that have cancelled your orders, at the moment I think you have made a good move, I was going to sell the Mini 2 to offset some of the cost of the Nano but it looks like I will have to swallow the whole cost for now, hopefully the issues can be eventually sorted with further firmware updates.
The camera, I think, is great.
JPEG unedited.
That’s a fair write up. I think it’s clear this drone is far better camera-wise but inferior flight-wise. Now, it’s not useless by any stretch, so I want to do some more comparison tests this week so ultimately people can work out what’s right for them.
Some situations require a great camera and the flight performance isn’t critical. So the Nano + would work fine.
Just because it’s not as fast as the Mini 2 isn’t in itself a reason not to buy.
Anyway, good news, I’ve been loaned the Nano+ for another full week over Easter; got my family down and my sister is an avid drone pilot too so we can get some direct side-by side flights filmed with the Nano+ and the Mini 2.
Cheers
Ian
That is exactly what I would like to do, get them both up together and do a real time comparison. I can and still will use the Nano +, I will just not be as adventurous with it as I would be with the Mini 2, at least until I get more aware of it’s capabilities/limitations. the sensor warnings do not bother me as I rarely use them anyway.
Need to play with it some more, it was brass monkeys on that beach this morning…
