Davinci Resove - 18.5 Final - 18.6 and Updates

Finally - 18.5 Beta has ended. :+1:

Not sure why they’ve changed the downloaded zip … there used to be only a single .exe that could be run directly from the zip without unzipping the file.

Now it contains two files … so the 4.5GB zip needs at least another 4.5GB to be unzipped before it can be installed. (Perhaps zip files have a limit of 4GB for contained files? Perhaps .exe files are limited to 4GB? Dunno. :man_shrugging:)

Lots to read if you want to - lots to not understand.

Pre-Installation Notes

For DaVinci Resolve 18.5, we have taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 18.1.4. While this allows you to access the project library with 18.1.4, individual projects created or opened in 18.5 will no longer be accessible in 18.1.4.

We recommend a full project library backup as well as individual project backups for projects before opening projects in 18.5.

Overall 18.1.4 to 18.5 changes.

You’ve hit my nail on the head. I even did a degree that covered off editing and there’s still some stuff that just gets assigned to the “its magic” part of my brain

18.5.1 Update

What’s New in DaVinci Resolve 18.5.1

(Just bug fixes … nothing “new”.)

Summary

• Addressed clips incorrectly switching grade version when stabilized.
• Addressed playback issues with voice isolation on some systems.

Fusion

An interesting discovery, this last week, for anyone with the Studio version of DR and that also uses the inbuilt Fusion to any significant extent …the same license works with the Fusion Studio stand alone software - normally $299.

Benefits

  • smaller and therefore loads significantly less than the whole of DR - more friendly to a lower spec computer.

Downside

  • slightly different UI
  • some tools are not common to both
  • no integration to edit timeline/grading tabs - it’s an “export” video only
  • transferring a Fusion project between the two isn’t straight forward
  • overall performance not improved … is still has to work on the same number of pixels using the same CPU/GPU.

Useful for anyone wanting to learn Fusion in greater depth, though, since the differences are small and the fundamental logic and skills to use are identical.

Finally got round to updating to 18.5 but more importantly took advantage of SE Asias very cheap electronics and bought a new laptop.

Now i can use Resolve without it crashing to desktop, without having to pre-cache or pre-render, use noise reduction at will and final export in minutes.

Was like pulling teeth before on my old laptop.

There’s a mini-update to 18.6.

Nothing earth-shattering, and probably nothing that benefits/interests most of us.
