DJI FPV now available in LiftOff

Well, I was going to get some Destiny 2 grinding done in my lunch “hour” but I think I’d best have a look at this instead.

Me and my mate could do with a 3rd for some of the end game activities in destiny Jez if you fancied joining us :ok_hand:t2: :+1:t2:

Happy to. I’ve not levelled very far yet this season. When were you thinking?

PM’d you to keep this on topic :+1:t2:

Talking of which…so, it’s another quad in the LiftOff collection. Slightly different OSD but in FP view mode it may as well be any of the others. :person_shrugging:

Man, I wish I was as good IRL as I am in LiftOff.

I am not familiar with racing drones etc, is this a computer game I can use to practice flying on my PC or mobile ?

Yes Liftoff is. TBH I prefer the feel of velocidrone (liftoff doesn’t feel right, and feels more arcadey). If you have a radio you can connect via USB then they are great fun, and a must if you want to get into FPV

Oh and they’re PC. Get a radio (cheapest you can use is the betaflight something about £38), though if you’re serious look at the more complete radios (TX16S,etc)

I also have FPV Air 2 (FPV Air 2 on Steam) and the DRL Sim (Play | The Drone Racing League)

OK. Simulators.

As @gunja99 says, as a rule, you need a proper transmitter that supports USB connection to use as a controller, although some support gamepads (passable), keyboard (almost impossible) or touch screen controls on mobile devices (very difficult).

While we are usually talking about FPV/racing simulators, it is worth noting that there is also a DJI Flight Simulator on PC which is compatible with your DJI controller.

Of the rest, a few have already been mentioned, but here are the main ones I know about.

ORQA FPV.SkyDive
FREE on Steam (although there is an additional map available for ÂŁ2.09)
There is also a free beta version available on Android

Flowstate
FREE on Steam
Edit: Just tried this (hey, it’s free) and could not get it to see my controller. Uninstalled

FPV Air 2
ÂŁ3.99 on Steam

FPV Freerider
ÂŁ4.79 on Steam
There is also a free demo version on their website and on Android

Drone Racing League (DRL) Simulator
ÂŁ7.19 on Steam

Uncrashed
ÂŁ10.99 on Steam

Liftoff
ÂŁ16.99 on Steam

Velocidrone
ÂŁ16.99 from their website

AI Drone Simulator
ÂŁ19.99 on Steam

This is by no means an exhaustive list and others are available on various platforms.

Key points to note are

  • If you’re new to FPV, it’s a very steep learning curve. I first tried on an Android sim and assumed it was broken. It took me about 8 hours before I felt even slightly in control.
  • Of the half-dozen or so I have tried, they are all pretty much of a muchness until your skills get to the level where you can spot the differences. Everyone has their favourites.

And, of course, here’s Mr. Bardwell to tell you about them all (well, quite a lot of them).

@bannerman100, if you want to give FPV a go for zero outlay then, by all means, have a look at the free demo FPV Freerider on Android. This isn’t the mobile simulator I first tried (I can’t remember what was) but I can tell you that even now, after 50+ hours of FPV flying, I had a job getting to grips with the touch-screen controls. It’s do-able, just, but it does make something that is already really quite hard just a little bit harder.

Alternatively, you might well be able to find someone who’ll be willing to give you a taster and get you started down the slippery FPV slope. Maybe at The Big Meet V2?

Briliant response. So many to choose from, heh!

In best Panto Voice…“Oh no it isn’t!”

I’d forgotten about the DJI sim as it wouldn’t run on my old laptop, upgraded laptop recently, saw this thread.

Installed it and it works wonderfully, renders beutifully on my new PC, the only problem is despite what cable I use betwixt controller and PC, it doesn’t look like the Mavic Air 2 controller is supported?

Have I missed something?

Cheers.

p.s If anyone has an old FPV controller that would work on a Sim and they no longer need, or recommendations, I could probably stretch to ÂŁ20 2nd hand

I can’t help with the DJI radio, though it’d normally be a USB cable.

That’s the cheapest radio on Unmanned tech (£31.99) that seems to support USB controller mode, though I’m not endorsing it. It’d definately get you going. When I started out I invested in a good radio (TX16S) and can have built up a few quads now. I wen’t cheap with the goggles, and soon upgraded those. It’s an expensive hobby, but well worth it. Have been playing velocidrone all day long today, it’s great fun!

BetaFPV LiteRadio 2 SE Transmitter (ELRS or Frsky D8/D16) – Unmanned Tech UK FPV Shop that one I’m considering getting for a friends son to learn… If you are consiering it then think of the protocols you may use, and some (not these two), can have modules added to give more functionality (i.e. crossfire or ELRS module).

Hi Earwig, many thanks for your comprehensive reply. So if I can get any DJI controller, will that enable me to use any drone simulator (or only the DJI sim) on my laptop ?

Unfortunately, the DJI controller will only work properly with the DJI simulator.

The way you fly FPV is substantially different for the most part, so the controller behaves differently. The main difference is that the throttle control is unsprung. There’s no fly-by-wire, it’s all down to your inputs.

I am planning to buy a DJI Mini 2. Compared to my current Eachine E58, DJI drones have quite complex control systems. So it would be good to get some virtual training on a simulator in advance.

On the DJI page: DJI Flight Simulator - Product Information - DJI , the Mavic Mini is not listed as supported.

But would I be able to use a Mini 2 controller with the DJI sim, even (virtually) flying a different DJI drone ?

I have found offered online “DJI Remote Controller for - Mini 2 / Mavic Air 2 / Air 2S RC231 SL10”

Would this be suitable and helpful for generally learning to fly on a DJI drone simulator before I buy a Mini 2 ?

Short answer no.

FPV drones fly completely differently to a camera drone like the mini 2.

So flight sims for FPV drones won’t help you. Camera drones practically fly themselves with very little human input. FPV drones on the other hand require a lot of human control just to keep them in the air.

Im sure there are sims out there for camera drones somewhere but I wouldn’t know where to look to find them. Controls on the mini 2 are very simple left stick up and down will raise and lower altitude left and right will yaw right stick up and down will move the drone forwards and backwards and left and right will move the drone left and right. Just remeber to invert the left and right if the drone is facing you lol

The DJI simulator supports a number of regular DJI camera drones, such as those on their page: DJI Flight Simulator - Product Information - DJI

So as I am not planning to do FPV racing, I thought the DJI simulator would be generally useful for basic training in the regular DJI models ?

Possibly but this is Lift off (an FPV simulator) not the DJI simulator :man_shrugging:t2:
