Drone flying anxiety

Hiya folks,

So I’m curious, when does the anxiety of flying your drone diminish?

I’m new to flying and a stress head but after filming around Worcester cathedral today I’ve been in clenched buttock position 2 flying down the river, am i going to crash into the the cathedral, why is the avoidance sensor going off 60m up, did that seagull look at me funny… etc

I have been pleasantly surprised that people seem more interested rather than adversarial though!

I’d say it’s just down to practice/experience.

I don’t think I will ever lose some sense of apprehension when flying, but I think that’s a good thing …. I don’t want to ever relax completely when flying as that (for me at least) is a recipe for disaster… I need to be alert and on edge to keep me from crashing!!

I would say that the more you fly, in more different situations, the less scary it feels.

My drone has no obstacle avoidance, so I really have to pay attention :face_with_peeking_eye:

Nah, it diminishes after a while. But, be careful, never become too complacent. It’ll come back to bite you when you least expect it.:wink:

@anon59239996 Was that the one in Cockermouth Jon? Always thought it looked a bit dodgy and they used to serve people on tables suspended above the river on that rickety metal structure! :scream: Be interesting to share your footage of the event. :+1:

PS. I only get nervous nowadays when there are people about. Lost the water phobia after last years Birthday Comp thing and the bird strike one after purchasing Care Refresh.

I think its definitley to do with being new and having £1000 floating around the sky helkd there by magic and fairy dust!

Plus the internet is an awful place for the nervous, especially Youtube: Drone crashes, bird attacks, drones thinking they are submersibles and all the things that could go wrong before you have even turned on the batteries!

Ive just got to learn to trust the drone and relax a bit and I am sure it will all be fine.

@anon59239996 Im not sure you can add a care pack if its been more than 48 hours since you have bonded your drone to your account, or at least thats what it told me when I connected my 2.

I however have both covered under my house insurance for no extra premium (personal belongings, both home and abroad) and the excess is half that of the DJI replacement costs of either.

I’ve found the anxiety dropped once I’d got used to the new ‘equipment’ I was using. Once I’d confidence in the drone and especially distances displayed to me on the screen, I was OK.

The it’s just a case of desensitizing about flying in public. You just get used to it.

You can get Care Refresh at any time, I got mine about 6 months after I purchased my mini 2 and sold the remainder with the drone 6 months later. :+1:

Ahh cool, perhaps its buying it through the registration screen as it is now unable to be selected. Im guessing you purtchase it directly from the DJI store and supply details of the drone in question?

@Harlequin They send you the requirement on what to video ie you have to perform a gimbal calibration and video of it taking off and landing etc. Its listed so you can go back and do it again if you f… cock up!

Same, for sure.

The other one is occasional vertigo when the drone gets up high and I feel like I need to lie down and hold on to the ground. That one definitely might just be me though

It’ll lessen over time

You are not the only one to get a little vertigo when up high. I remember the first time I took the Mavic Air over 200ft, I had to land.
I still get a little if looking down from 400ft, changing to metric helped me as 120m isn’t as scary.

Go all the way and tell yourself it’s just over 0.1 kilometres, basically ignore it as a rounding error!

I’ve been working up to flying from more public locations since getting a drone relatively recently (just over a month ago now) and only practicing over isolated fields completely alone.

Today I flew in London from the Thames bank by Tower Bridge. I’d worried it’d be really busy/crowded and attract attention - being London, the reality was nobody gave a $#!t and once I’d relaxed into the flight it was great fun!

A fair bit of practice in the days leading up, some planning/reading up on location and ultimately just being comfortable in the controls goes miles to relieving anxiety. I’d be much more prepared to fly from more public locations now, than I was just a week ago. It’s great!

FYI Careful around Tower Bridge, there are few pilots here that have lost drones due to hidden no fly zones there. You can see a note about it here.

Thanks - my reading up included the helpful threads on here, so I went with that zone pre-unlocked.

Shame about the weather!

A meet-up can help with confidence.

Yes have to agree, only had my drone a few weeks and only managed to fly it once. So worried (Butt Clenching) got the video button worng and turned it off when I wanted it on :joy:

Took it up to 80 meters and I swear I didnt breath for a few minutes…

Not been able to fly again yet as I live by Birmingham Airport :smiling_face_with_tear:, moving to Wales soon so loads of flying

Hi @oldmang, it looks as though you’re quite new here :wave:t2:

Why not nip over to the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself. :+1:t2:

Wow, moviong to Wales just to fly your drone, now thats dedication
